Just picked this set up a few months back. It's all original with a birth date of May, 1958.

Not too bad for $400... ;)

I can't believe I missed this post! Wonderful kit, and for such a low price! Great find, really!

Bermuda,

I love your collection of Ludwig drums!!!

I saw the new Keystone series at Guitar Center recently, but the kit they had with Abalone kit they had seemed to have a lot of pink whereas yours does not. Yours definitely looks much closer to the original.

Hey Bermuda, I'm interested in the Legacy Classic series. Can you tell me what's sonically the difference between the Legacy Classic and the Classic Maple line?

Classic Maple is a modern sound, warm with some bite, and Legacy is a mellower, sweeter sound, more like Ludwig's '60s drums.

Thanks, and I assume the 'pink' you refer to is probably some of the clear sections of the wrap where the wood shows through. In the case of the GC exclusive kit, it's oak:

On the original oyster black/blue/pink drums from 40+ years ago, the wood was mahogany, and added nice brown streaks to those wraps. That's why attempts to reproduce the finishes without the brown never look quite the same as the original. There have been some beautiful and very pure versions of the finish, but that little detail is what separates them. But the new black abalone has it. :)

That's insane, bermuda. Must've cost you a big deal of money. You're a real Ludwig lover.............

As for the black oyster, I like the vintage version, it's softer to look at than the new one. It's one my favorite wrap finishes besides white marine...........

I had not considered that the pink could have been the underlying wood of the shell.

Thanks for the insight!

I'm still happy I chose White Marine Pearl for my Classic Maples, but that gorgeous Silver Glass Glitter with the blond hoops is pretty special. I like the Abalone, too. Looks great up-close.

I just LOVE that colour Latz.

Big Ol' Ludwig Rock kit. That is what I always picture when I think Ludwigs. Probably cause as a teenager, some of my friends who were way better on double bass than me, had big double kick Ludwig set ups.

Thanks Goon. Want it? I'm pretty sure I want to sell it.

I don't consider a big ol' kit, but I prefer/like big kits anyway. 2-22's 10, 12, 14, 16 & 6.5 snare

Here's my newest kit, a 7 piece set of Ludwig Centennials in green sparkle lacquer. It's my first Ludwig kit. Apart from a few problems upon receiving the kit (everything's been set straight though), I am really loving these drums! PS. I know the red kit is not Ludwig, but I could resist; grandpa bought my 2 year old son his first drum kit yesterday for his birthday :)

Only got two snares right now. One of these days I'll pull the trigger and get a vintage, or legacy classic 26/16/13 set!

6.5x14 1976 Supraphonic with a Vintage Ambassador, Ambassador Snare Side, and Puresound Custom 20-strand snares.
6.5x14 2010 Stainless Steel Black Magic with a Coated Ambassador, Ambassdor Snare Side, and Ludwig 20-strand snares.
I love my Luddies! :)

Here's my vintage 6x13 3-ply maple snare. It's got 11 strand wires on it right now. From the serial number and the guide on the Ludwig site I believe it's from the late 60's. The serial number is 3311735. If any Ludwig experts could help me out with the date that would be fantastic.

Hello everyone! It's been a long time since I've posted anything in this forum, and since then a lot has changed. I went from being a starving musician to landing a good-paying job (as a watchmaker-in-training!). I decided that since I had the money it was time to upgrade my setup. Initially I planned to get a set of Yamaha Recording Customs, but then I saw a set of Ludwig Classic Maple drums for sale (used!) on Memphis Drum Shop's website, and I knew my search was over. Quite simply, this is the best kit I have ever played! Here are all the technical specs:

Drums- Ludwig Classic Maple toms and kick in Champagne Sparkle wrap finish (12x8, 16x16, 22x16). Yamaha brass snare drum (13x5.5). 11" banjo shell (used as a timbale!)

Heads- Kick: Remo Powerstroke 3 coated batter, Ludwig Weather Master Heavy smooth white reso with 5 inch hole and felt strip for muffling. Small pillow inside drum for muffling. (I have also played it wide open with solid heads and it sounds great that way, too!)
Toms: Remo Pinstripe clear batters, Remo Ambassador clear reso's.
Snare: Remo Ambassador X coated batter, Ambassador Hazy reso.

Cymbals: 13 inch hi hats (Late 1960's Avedis Zildjian top / Avedis Mastersound bottom), 20 inch Paiste Giant Beat crash-ride, 21 inch Avedis Zildjian ride from the late 1950's.

Hardware: DW 5000 Accelerator bass drum pedal, DW boom arms grafted onto various cymbal stands, Ludwig "extra-low" snare stand, Yamaha HS 740 hi-hat stand, Roc N Soc throne.

This is my Ludwig.. 1964 Silver Sparkle. When I already bought it the man who sold it told me that Joe Morello did a clinic on this kit.. !! I have a smale paper with his autograph and the name of the person who he gave a lesson. Very strange: On March 12th 2011 I did my first gig with this kit, that day Joe Morello died..

Wow I am so proud to play this kit, it's a dream coming true everytime I play on it.. It sound super en looks awesome!!

My red sparkle club dates from 69'. I finally got some pictures that do justice!

20x14
14x6.5 COA 1976 Supraphonic
14x6.5 2010 Stainless Steel Black Magic
14x5 1969 Red Sparkle Pioneer

Best sounding drums I've heard to date.

1958 Super Classics, black diamond pearl. Bought 'em new 50+ years ago. Sold them last year to help pay for my DW Collector kit. I literally have no pix of them except for a few taken for Craigslist. (Proving how much we take things for granted when we've got 'em.)
