the batter heads are usually tuffer and stand up to more damage than the
resonant head and the resonant head is generally just used for resonating as the name implies.

In theory there is no difference, because you can use any head you like as a batter or a reso.

For instance: Remo calls clear Ambassadors batter heads, but they are the most popular reso head there is. Most folks don't like them much as batters--they are quite bright--but the coated version is the most common batter head there is.

Generally speaking, the vast majority of drummers use 1-ply 10mil clear heads as resonant heads. That would include the Ambassador and the Evans G1, as well as other companies' versions.

Batter heads are where the preferences start to come in. I like coated Ambassadors; others prefer a 2-ply head such as the Emperor, still others like 1-ply heads with a control ring, 1-ply heads with a center dot, 2-ply heads with a control ring, 2-ply heads with center dots, and on and on. Most all heads come in coated and clear versions.

Confused yet? ;-)

Simply, no. UNLESS the head in question is designated as a resonant head. For example, Evans makes "Resonant Glass" heads as well as the new EC-Reso heads which will be coming out soon. Those are specially designed to function the best as a resonant head. Otherwise if it doesn't have a designation, you can use it as either, although you want to stick to single-ply heads. Double-ply heads like Remo Pinstripes, Evans G2's, EC2's, Remo Emperor's etc.. usually kill all the resonance in the drum if used as a resonant head.

Hello. This is my first post. Salut!

I just got a used kit and the toms came with clear G2s as the batters and clear Emperors as the resonant heads. I was leery at first, but it honestly sounds pretty darn good.

For years, though I used coated ambassadors on top and bottom. I had a rotation cycle. I'd get new tom head and put them on the resonant side, then move the resonant side to the batter side. When the batters wore out, I'd repeat the cycle. It gave me always newer resonant heads, the batter heads were stretch, but not beat up at all, and they held their tuning very well.

Cheers,
Ben Adrian

Hmmm. That is interesting. I have often thought about trying clear Emperors on the bottoms just to experament but have yet to actually do it.
