my drums right now sound almost exactly like that, such a great sound.

its really up to you which one you buy

if you like short stack toms, go for superstar
if you want a standard kit, Pro M

both have the potential to sound like that aaron spears' clip

What heads do you use to get that sound.

Nevermind I just reread the thread and saw you use coated ambassadors. Their was one thing i just realized would I be able to get the shorter floor toms to the height i want since i am around 6' 3" and sit pretty high on the drumset.

i actually hate slipknot, really really cant stand them, but love the snare. haha

these are replacing the standard superstar line (standard sized toms)
which i think is pretty silly
because not everyone likes short stack toms so they'd probably lose
a lot of potential buyers...

the floor toms arent any shorter than a standard kit,
so you could easily get them to the height you want.

i also sit pretty high and was worried about this but i had no trouble at all with them

yah, but aren't the superstars the replacement to the rockstars? and tama still sells the original superstars. nice kit btw, i don't know if i said that in my previous post. I really like the set up and the finish. I think tama offers by far the best product for your money. but thats just me.

i looked it up and yeh, the superstars are replacing the rockstars which is
a good thing i think.
there was a huge discussion on tama discontinuing the standard sized superstars
on this site a while ago, maybe tama finally realised what a bad decision that was.

and BTW, so true about tama offering the best value for money, unbelievable price on this

Do the Floor Toms come with memory locks? How are the Bass drum spurs, pretty solid? Looking to get one...The custom version in Dark Desert Burst...bigger sizes though 24, 12,13, 16, 18.

Thanks!

the floor toms dont come with memory locks, but i wouldn't worry about that.
they havent moved a millimeter since i set them.

and the bass drum spurs are very solid, i also thought about this when i
saw it for the first time but was pleasantly surprised.

the 18" floor tom on the kit you would is gonna have a serious rumble to it
if my 16" is something to go by...

thanks nimby!...i'll probably have to get some kind of generic lock then to set the legs. not worried about them slipping, just need to get them from the cases to show position quickly...

thanks again!

I'm all over these! I just ordered my 6pc in Dark desert burst with a 18x22" kick drum!
The instore display (SK wrap) sounded so awesome ..just the sound I was looking for to track our new CD in the studio! I was close to getting a set of Starclassic Performer birch, til I found out they were discontinued! With the SS hypers..I don't need to spend the extra $$$$ AWESOME kits! Mine should be in on the 24th of April!!! Can't wait!

Just tried the exact kit, same brushed blue, same sizes. Loved it so much I bought it on the spot. Most stunning looking kit ive seen in a while. Sounds like a kit twice its price. The toms really sing and the bass is SICK!

had a few kits in the past and for metal or anything fast the resonance and rebound from these drums is completely untouchable in the price range

Hi all! New member here!

Got my Superstar Hyperdrive this week. It is my first drumkit since I sold my Starclassic Maple 9 years ago.

I got the SL52HX in Gray Pewter. It looks fantastic. :)

The 13x6 snare and especially the 22x20 kick sound really great, but I have some problems to get the toms to sound good. I changed the heads to Emperors, but the sound didn't get a lot better than with the stock heads. I can't really explain the problem, as I don't know the correct English term, but I would describe the sound as unpleasant ringing overtones. Anyone experienced this also?

Maybe it is me and my lack of tuning skills, or it's the hyperdrive sizes (well, I also don't like the sound of the floor tom, which is normal size).

Another little complaint: the brushed nickel hardware looks great, but it scratches quite easily (at least it is more visible than with standard hardware).

This is the exact arrangement I want in my next kit! I love the double floor toms and two rack toms to the left of the kick.

The Hyperdrives are amazing. I played one at drumfest and i was totally blown away by the sound. the toms are so punchy, its great! And they look awesome too. A friend of mine brought a set a few weeks ago with the white finish and he's really pleased with them.

I had the ringing problem with my kit when I bought it too. Tried EC2 coated's at first, then I picked up the Evans Black hydraulic 2-plys and now it's got the punch and short sustain I was looking for. I didn't swap the resonants because I didn't want to deaden it too much, and now after a fine tuning, it's just right. No ring, no muddy tones.

Thats a nice looking kit btw!

That's one sweet looking kit, Holly.

I have a Superstar kit too, and when I played it with the stock heads (tuned as well I could) they were just TOO loud and there was some ringing I couldn't dial out. Heavier heads and new resos changed the sound dramatically. I'm using EC2 clear/G1 clear on the toms, tuned to the same pitch top and bottom. Works well for rock and metal.

Don't forget the importance of new resos. If you switch out your batters and leave the stock resos on, you will still deal with some of that boingy sound. I did. At the very least, put the stock batters on the reso side of your toms until you can get new resos; they are a bit heavier.

Congrats on your beautiful new kit. Looks classy.

the answer to your prayers (to get your drums to sound great..) is aquarian drumheads...IMO the best heads on the market..i play mapex saturn hybrid birch/walnut combo with aquarian super 2 batters or response 2 (clear or coated) with classic clear resonant heads..try them out and i can almost guarantee that you'll be pleased with the overall sound of your drum kit..keep drumming..peace..

it is seriously one of the most beautiful kits to play and it sounds so good, even with the crappy stock heads!
although i will be putting coated ambassadors on all the tom batters very soon...
also the roadpro hardware i got with it is great, very sturdy.
all i need is a double tom stand now.

Specs:
10x6.5
12x7
14x12
16x14
22x18

Snares
Pearl Joey Jordison Sig. - 13x6.5
Tama Superstar - 14x5.5

Cymbals - all Zildjian
14" ZBT HiHats (changing soon)
16" A Custom Crash
8" ZXT Splash (changing soon)
21" A Sweet Ride (brilliant finish)
16" ZBT Crash (changing soon)
14" ZXT Total Trash China (cracked, very unhappy)

P.S. the pictures are pretty bad, my drum room doesnt have a good light in it and
its not the best for getting good photos in but these will do 'til i get some decent
ones

the finish is alot more blue than what it looks in the photos, once again, very dark room!
So how is the Superstar treatin' you? It looks totally cool and that throne is just the right touch.

They look really nice, but I'd be concerned about how well the toms project live- being that they're that shallow.

NIMBY, nice set man! If I'm seeing the pictures right, thats a 21" Zildjian Sweet Ride, correct? If so, how does it sound? I just purchased the Zlidjian promo pack from Musician's Friend that has that ride, New Beat hats, and two crashes. But I'm in Iraq and won't get to hear it until I go on leave in May. i'm dying to know how this cymbal performs. Specifically, the bell. Zildjian is know for thier bells and from what I have read this Ride is a better crash than ride and the bell isn't really pronounced.

I just bought a 20" Zildjian Swisher Ride too just in case I don't like the Sweet Ride. Thanks!

in my opinion you can't really go wrong with the Sweet Ride.
its got an awesome crash to it if you lay the shoulder of the stick into it,
the bell is my favourite sound it produces, its sharp, projects extremely well
and is a fantastic pitch.

that pack you've bought should set you up for good, new beats are awesome!

i feared that as well when i first bought them, but mine have huge projection to them,
the coated ambassador/clear ambassador combination gives them massive resonance.

wewts, i'm even more excited now! as far as the new beats, they are very good hats but i'm a mastersound fan. so i also got a remote hat stand to set the new beats up on the right, but primarily only use them open as the mastersound hats i use as main are a bit lacking while open.

Im more of a mastersound fan myself, A Custom 13" to be precise, but the new beats are great all-round.

I myself have a Superstar, Brushed Burgundy Metallic.
How would you compare the 14" floor to the 16"? I'm considering getting one in the near future...

Are you considering getting a 14"? If so, do. Well Worth it.

the 14" has alot of punch and tonality to it - very full and deep with great sustain.
and the 16" just thunders. I've got mine tuned fairly low to add a nice bottom end to the kit. Again, excellent tone - very full, deep with great sustain.

The stock heads that came on my were god awful, wouldn't tune for the life of them haha.
Hopefully I will have a set of Clear G1's batter and resonant on them in a few weeks.

Personally, I would go the Red finish.

Will you be getting the 6 piece setup?

it is seriously one of the most beautiful kits to play and it sounds so good, even with the crappy stock heads!
although i will be putting coated ambassadors on all the tom batters very soon...
also the roadpro hardware i got with it is great, very sturdy.
all i need is a double tom stand now.

Specs:
10x6.5
12x7
14x12
16x14
22x18

Snares
Pearl Joey Jordison Sig. - 13x6.5
Tama Superstar - 14x5.5

Cymbals
- all Zildjian
14" ZBT HiHats (changing soon)
16" A Custom Crash
8" ZXT Splash (changing soon)
21" A Sweet Ride (brilliant finish)
16" ZBT Crash (changing soon)
14" ZXT Total Trash China (cracked, very unhappy)

P.S. the pictures are pretty bad, my drum room doesnt have a good light in it and
its not the best for getting good photos in but these will do 'til i get some decent
ones

the finish is alot more blue than what it looks in the photos, once again, very dark room!
A thing of real beauty- stunning in every way.........I want one!

Hm, I didn't think they sounded that bad, but everyone's ear responds differently :) I wonder if the lacquer finished drums come with different heads than the wrapped finishes. I believe the one I played was wrapped.

At this point I'm thinking the blue one, but when the time comes to actually get them, It'll probably change. I wasn't liking any of the new finishes for this year :(
