Default Tama Superstar Hyperdrive - I'm in Love

my new kit came yesterday, a Tama Superstar Hyperdrive in a Brushed Vintage Blue wrap

it is seriously one of the most beautiful kits to play and it sounds so good, even with the crappy stock heads!
although i will be putting coated ambassadors on all the tom batters very soon...
also the roadpro hardware i got with it is great, very sturdy.
all i need is a double tom stand now.

Specs:
10x6.5
12x7
14x12
16x14
22x18

Snares
Pearl Joey Jordison Sig. - 13x6.5
Tama Superstar - 14x5.5

Cymbals
- all Zildjian
14" ZBT HiHats (changing soon)
16" A Custom Crash
8" ZXT Splash (changing soon)
21" A Sweet Ride (brilliant finish)
16" ZBT Crash (changing soon)
14" ZXT Total Trash China (cracked, very unhappy)

P.S. the pictures are pretty bad, my drum room doesnt have a good light in it and
its not the best for getting good photos in but these will do 'til i get some decent
ones

the finish is alot more blue than what it looks in the photos, once again, very dark room!

Great set-up there. It looks very comfortable!

I've actually been looking at these myself but cant find anywhere near me that stocks them :( oh well!

One again nice set-up!

nice kit man! A Tama Starclassic will be my next drumkit when I've upgraded everything except my drums. After that I want a set of Kumuīs, but thatīs 10 years from now :p.

Have fun playing it :-). Post some pictures when you have new heads.

The brushed metal finish is awesome! How would you compare a hyperdrive sized tom to a regular full sized one ?

i would say that the hyperdrive tom has definetly got more bite to it, the tone i think is a bit brighter too but that might just be the birch/basswood.

one thing is for sure though, they resonate for a lifetime! i love them dearly haha

Sweet. Another Hyperdrive kit owner. I wonder, is the only difference between yours and mine the finish? (wrap vs lacquer)

Beautiful kit!! I like the wrap and the setup. Now your Pork Pie throne matches your drums!! It all fits very nicely together.

apparently so, i checked the website and the only difference between the superstars,
superstar customs and the EFX's is the finishes,
every other feature is the same.

what head have you got on yours?
the stock heads suck bad and was thinking about some coated ambassadors, good idea?

Alex
i havent owned a maple kit, this being an upgrade from my first kit ( a Dixon Tempo - dunno what wood they are made from... )
but i can tell you how it sounds.

the whole kit has mass amounts of punch, especially the kick.

all the kick needed dampening-wise was a rolled up towel in the middle, not touching any of the heads - awesome boom!
(though will take it out when i get a PS3 for it)

the rack toms are warm and sharp with a very bright, clear tone

the floor toms are also very warm, i felt that the 16" floor tom was lacking in bottom end
but im fairly sure its just the crappy stock heads.

the snare i feel is just useless, i cant get anything from it but its cool because it works great as a timbale.

as a whole, the kit is awesome, i cant get over how good it sounds even with the bad heads! cant wait to get some coated ambassadors on it and really get it to sing

Ambassadors sound good on the toms, yes. I've got coated emperors on mine right now. I want to try PS3s though. SKII on the kick is very, very nice.

Cool. I ask because my neighbor is giving away a 3pc kit that looks very much like that, but the badges on his are torn off so I don't know what it is. I thought about using it as a secondary practice or gig kit. I think I'm going to give it to my band mate to use in his practice space.

Great kit, buying a tama superstar is a purchase you won't easily regret! My teacher has a Starclassic Birch and mentioned he could barely tell the difference in sound between his kit and my superstars.

I gave that kit some serious thought before finally opting for the fusion. It looks sweet, man.

The mixed reviews on the Superstar snare are interesting. Some say it is one of the standout features of the kit, yet I've seen several posts by owners to the contrary, also. I'm still playing it with the stock heads (cranked up tight) and I like the sound from behind the kit; when my daughter is playing it downstairs, the sound that makes it upstairs seems good, too.

What do you Superstar owners think of the resonance of the toms? Is it the mounting system, or what?

when i first got the kit, it took a while to find the sweet spot on the snare but now it sounds pretty darn nice - cranked up reeeal tight.

and as for the toms, mine sing for ages. they resonate more than my standard sized kit.

I fell in love with the snare when I got my kit. Has a real cutting crack to it when tuned very tight, and that's with the stock heads fitted. Matter of fact, I still have those on after having my kit for almost four months.

Gives pretty good rim shots too!

the rim shots on it are intense, theyre louder than when i do them on my joey snare.

mine still has the stock heads on it and sounds good too, which surprised me
because the stock heads on the toms sounded like CRAP looking back at it now

its amazing...its got a huge tuning range, from low, fat sounds to high pitched pops (i have mine like this, gets an amazing pop) also has a great crack to it.

if youre considering getting one, i would say go for it. you will not regret it at all

i just bought a Superstar Custom Hyperdrive kit with the Custom Titanium Fade lacquer finish. haven't picked it up from the shop yet because it came in with a cracked 14 x 12 floor tom. i've played drums with wraps before and i think lacquer finishes let the drums resonate just a little more. i was going to go with the vintage brushed blue wrap -- it looks killer! -- but the titanium fade just blew my mind so i had to get it. i'm so looking forward to the shallow toms.

i'll post some photos of it when i get it home. we're talking new cymbals, hardware . . . everything.

12 x 7 rack tom
14 x 12 floor tom
16 x 14 floor tom
22 x 18 bass drum
14 x 5.5 Yamaha kabuto red steel snare drum

Beautiful metallic wrap, really nice drums. I can't handle a huge drop-off between toms but if it fits you that what matters most.

Gotta say, I wish people would point out where their drums rank in a manufacturer's hierarchy. There are so many different threads about specific lines and types and I don't know many of the terms, i.e., a Yamaha Warp Engine Ear Crusher Deluxe MLXVIICD vs. a PDP BFD ADD HGH with Real Human Pigment stain. I think there were far fewer choices in years past so it was easier to understand the product lines.

ya i actually picked the drums up on friday minus the cracked floor tom which will be coming soon. tama really has done it with the superstars. i'd been a strictly yamaha player since i was 13. that's 21 years. i'm a tama convert for sure. the finish is gorgeous. the nickel hardware is gorgeous. the starcast mounts rule. now basswood is not the greates wood but the birch is audible and the basswood looks good so who the F cares? even with the crummy stock heads the drums rule. the 22 x 18 bass drum is a monster and with a ported front head and a better batter head i'm thinking it's gonna be a punchy drum. the short rack toms (i did get the 10 inch but i'm not using it) are punchy and very resonate, very good tone, not too much sustain, beautiful. i would definitely say that if you're looking for a loud set of drums that you won't cry over if someone splashes a little beer on (because of the price) then go for the superstars.

couldn't have said it any better myself...enjoy!

and FYI - coated ambassadors sound A-FREAKING-MAZING on the toms, totally blown away!

So in your opinion should i buy the superstar or save up a couple hundred more for a pro m.

Do the superstars have the potential to sound like this...
