Default Bob Gatzen Video - "The Forgotten Drumhead (Resos)"

Here is a great new video from Bob Gatzen on YouTube talking about affect of different resonant drumheads. For anyone who was curious as to what a certain head can do as a resonant, this should clear some things up. Also, we see a product from Evans which I don't think has been released yet, the EC-Reso, which sounds amazing and dramatically changes the tone of the drum.

Nice video...just like the other videos Bob made! A great guy with some great tips!
It`s impressive how much a 7 mil reso head "kills" the resonance compared with a standard 10 mil one ply head.

Really enjoyed this video and his demonstrations!

I know, I had previously thought the opposite. I figured the thinner it was, the more it was going to vibrate. I've used resonant glass in the past and didn't honestly pay attention to the outcome. I'll have to try them again.

Well that sucks... I emailed him on YouTube and asked what happened to it.

I guess a mod can delete this now.

*edit*

I heard back. He made a mistake when talking about millimeters so he is going to fix it and reload the video. I'll update this once the new one is up.

He is a drummer/clinician who works with companies like Evans, Noble and Cooley, DW/PDP and helps them design new products. He helped design the PDP BOA pedals most recently. He has a "Drum Tuning and Design" DVD...at least that's what I think the correct title is, which is EXCELLENT. I have his older VHS from the 90's (different video all together) and it's amazing. The guy's a genius.

Tell me what I missed and I will listen to the video again, but the the first head and second head were definitely different in sustain, but the new EC Reso sounded very close to the first head. What did I miss?

Although the pitch of the resonant head was tuned the same each time, the tone with the EC-Reso (the last head) was deeper because of damped frequencies. The pitch also sounded lower.

I wonder how that reso head would affect a snare...

It would be too thick and muffled to put on a snare. A snare side head needs to be very thin in order to vibrate to not choke the drum and still give sensitivity.

Indeed, snare side heads are like 2 or 3 mil. and this is 10 mil.

And after a second listen I do hear the difference. Thanks.

Cool video. I could really hear the differences, especially when he played them side by side. I like the sound of that new head.

Very cool, i've always been big on switching those out with every other replacement of the top heads.. I still prefer the G-1 to the new Reso however.. I like my drums overtones especially with dynamic playing.

Very enlightening!! I need to change mine very badly. I liked the G1's but would like to see how those EC-resonants would do too. It sounded like the drum was doing a pitch bend with the EC's where it held the same pitch with the G1's...interesting.

A side note. I noticed how much snare buzz he had while jamming on the kit. I used to hate that and would always try keep my snare from buzzing, but I remember Wavelength commenting on how it adds to the ambiance of the overall sound and now I do appreciate it much more. I think it adds a lot to Bob's drum sound too.

Oh I forgot to mention. Bob got back to me about when the EC-Resonants would be available and he said that they're being debuted at NAMM this week and should be in stores within the next 30-60 days.

I asked Bob and said 'Good recommendation. In the works, different issues to address... sorry can't discuss it at this time'

Looks like there will be thinner EC snare resos a bit later on.

Interesting..I wonder what it's aim would be though...to reduce sympathetic buzz maybe?

Yeah my guess would be to cut down the buzz and focus the overtones or something

LOL.. I stopped in at my local music shop and asked about them this morning, they called the Evans Rep here in Oz and no one knew anything... I have asked that they get in sizes to fit my toms so that I can try them.. Guess I'll be the first here to do so..

Peace!

Well I guess what Bob said should have a disclaimer "U.S. and maybe Canada Only" All other times may vary :)

My first drum kit I bought (80's Swingstars) had the original Reso on them. I sat there thinking "Man, these are sounding like crap!". But then I replaced some of the Resos and they came back to life.

I also know a semi-pro drummer that plays on kits with the original Resos on them. He's a great player, but he seriously bashes his kits. I bet his drums would sound tons better with less attack and new Resos.

I love his videos, very interesting and entertaining!

I remember when I bought my Yammie Maple Custom. It hat Pinstripes over stock heads, all over. I can't believe hov bad they sounded. I knew they where great drums, and getting Ambassadors over and under, was like a miracle!

So to everybody playing stock resos: Get som new ones! They are as important as the batters

That was a great video. I'm not too fond of the sound of the new Evans reso though, I hate pitch bends. I think the 10mil sounded the best. I'm considering getting new (10 mil) resos that are coated so the sustain is shortened slightly but it keeps the warmer tone. I like long sustain myself but when my kit is mic'd and amped I get all sorts of complaints because of too much sustain.

anyone try the EC resos yet? i just got em.. they're pretty good, might need help getting the peak sound out of my toms though.. i have ec2 clears on them now, but i also picked up a standard set of coated ec2s to see if i get some nice low end. also just replaced the snare head with an evans power center snare head for my Stewart Copeland snare. i had the ec reverse dot on it and it took away all of the crack and sensitivity (which was i got that snare in the first place!) next is replacing the heads on my piccolo and bass drum!
