Default speed king mods

Mostly because my wife would have killed me if I went out right after Christmas and bought a $325 Kick Pro Detonator, I went for a new Ludwig Speed King to try out the compression spring. When I was in my twenties, I loved Speed Kings, but having more strength and less finesse than I do now as a 55 year old, I broke a lot of the medal connectors between the pedal and the cam mechanism. I hope my relative physical weakness and technique now makes that a non-issue. :-)

If, however, I find it to still be an issue, do you of you Speed King advocates (especially Harry) have any advice on how to strengthen it up?

Thanks

No "quick fix" that I've seen. My last Speed King I just sold to a cat who is total gagga for John Bonham. My buddy who can really smoke on one (who did the floor plate mod), just always has spare parts on hand. He buys every one he sees at $5-25 used. If you're handy with fabrication, I'm looking at my Ghost pedal (it's literally less than 4' from where I sit right now) and wondering if that type of dual direct drive link could be used/modified/copied to work on a Speed King. I don't think you'll have a problem, however. The cat I sold my last S.K. to bashes and stomps like "the Hulk", and he hasn't broken that pedal yet.

Harry, I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing (maybe we are). I mean the little two inch by 1/2 inch piece of metal that connects the floor board to the beater.

Well, I think we are. As most all pedals fall into 1 of 3 categories. Chain drive, strap drive or direct drive, you are refering to the direct drive part of the S.K. (the piece that is neither a chain or strap). I've never seen any mods for it. Just replace it if worn, bent or broken. It could possibly be ordered from Ludwig even.

Yes, you can get that linkage from Ludwig.

If you have a 'habit' of breaking them, I'd just get 3 or 4 at a time so they're available when you need one.

They aren't that expensive, and you can play the pedal you want.

Sometimes we just have to suck it up and pay the price....

I never really broke the link, maybe once in 8 years or so.

The SK is a great pedal, but I play an Eliminator these days.

I put a SK up recently, and the side posts are shorter than the Eliminator I use now so the feel was kinda all wacky... but it was still a nice pedal to play.

Taller posts work better for a 26 though....

Could you send me a bigger pic or possibly zoomed in to the specific part? I work in metal and I might be able to come up with a way to fabricate a stronger part to replace that with.
Is it where the cam attaches to the Chain/Strap? or where the Pedal attaches to the Chain/Strap?
