I love them, but that is wildly misleading to just leave it at that. In as much as X-shells themselves are really nice, the real payoff comes from being able to state how you want your set to sound at a high level (figuratively) and then letting DW employ whatever construction techniques are necessary to achieve it. In other words, if you really want a set of drums that not only work and sound good together, but also have an exact pitch distribution, it is better to not spec the construction type at all and instead ask for how you want your kit to be. For instance, I asked for my kit to hit the lowest notes possible for the sizes that I specced while also having a very even distribution. So, they started with the largest drums and used X-Shells. Then as they worked their way up to the smallest drums, they picked the best construction types that would keep the notes low while also keeping them from jumping too large or narrow a gap. As a result, my kit is monstrously deep and every adjacent tom pair is within a half step of a minor 4th apart, so tom transitions are ultra smooth. I've purchased a lot of kits that have sounded great (like my DW birch kit), but there was always some element of surprise in terms of where the kit landed as a whole. You know, every drum sounds great, but maybe the 10" tom is higher than I wanted or the interval between the floors is a little narrow, etc... Not so with a hybrid.

looks more like a woofer than a gong bass :O. must say very nice and also very wierd kinda kit. reminds me kinda of the fibreglass blamiere (probably not spelt right) on the forum which has 2 bassdrums spread far apart.

That is exactly what that is, it is a woofer mounted as a tom.
Very impressive kit. And I am doing the math in my head. Even at 40%..... |

Just so you guys know, it's spelled Blaemire. The kit that you speak of is Jerry Jenkins monster kit.

I know u guys are really into DW... but i have a Mapex Saturn kit (1 drum bigger than this kit) that i would put up against any dw when it comes to sound. Those maple walnut shells are slammin!! Granted dw shells are killer as well... just PRICYYYYY!! (hints ebay and craigslist hustlin!) ;-) |

I was wondering if anyone knew if you can buy DW collectors series badges anywhere?
Even if I had to get them from DW, does anyone know if that's an option?

If im not mistaken.... you can't purchase dw badges.. There were some issues online (especially eBay) where guys were taking Keller shells and slapping DW badges on them.. and selling them.
I actually work at a drum shop and dw won't even sell us individual parts (like casings and lugs).. Anyway, i know you can definitely grab some off of eBay. Considering this is the only known place to get them, they are normally somewhat expensive. Hope this helps!! -Chris |

thanks for the response!
And correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't every DW drum have a date and the note printed on the inside? I'm looking at a DW kick on ebay and I asked the seller for the date and he told me there wasn't one and says that I am wrong about every shell having a date.

You cant buy badges or lugs, DW will allow you to replace lugs but you have to send in your DW lugs first.
Great kits all! |

Here is my DW kit, which I got back in '96. Does anybody know the name of this finish? I am thinking about trying to aquire an extra drum or two, and DW doesn't make it anymore. BTW, Also showing is a Gretsch Catalina Club Mahogany snare which sounds amazing.
Regards, Alex

Carter for sure. About 9 years ago I switched to open handed to play DMB stuff. It made things more interesting for playing all genres of music.

...these are my 50th birthday present to myself.
These are the classics that I have lusted after. 22x14, 12x8, 14x14, 16x16, 14x5 in vintage marine pearl. These drums sound great, and are a night and day difference from my collectors. I have the best of both worlds, bright and poppy with great projection from the 22,12,14 classics, big, boomy, and warm enough to pop popcorn from the 24,13.16 collectors. That being said, I would still run past the classics to save the collectors if my basement was on fire, but that could change. Barry
