Default Life-changing pointers

I had a chance meeting with Jason Martz, a producer, and a dude who played synths for Michael Jackson's Black & White ( besides touring with Zappa ).

During a free-wheeling conversation about many things, I asked him if there were any "words" or a " credo" that he lived by, as a musician.

He said yes he did and it was a saying by Quincy Jones, and it was something he lived by, ever since he heard it.

Quincy had simply said " leave a little room for god".

It was his response to recording exec suggestions of filling up bar space in the tracks that were felt to be too bare and sparse.

My mom, who was a singer herself and who took great pride in her son's passion for music, once told me "Just tell the truth when you play, and it will all work out in the end"

That struck me as profound.

I'm sure lots of people taught you how to read, and hold sticks, and stuff, but anybody pointed you in the right life direction, that you might be thankful for, looking back ?

Any of y'all get any life changing pointers from higher life-forms? Greater, more experienced musicians? People smarter than yourself?

Credos that YOU live by?

This thread should be good.

My dad asked my grandma why we are all here and SHE simply replied, "To help other people" thats the phrase I live by everyday.

Heh, that's beautiful.

One thing my dad, a career drummer, told me, when I was about 15 or so, was "stay cool...and don't let anyone influence you negatively. There's always going to be bad people out there who will try to bring you down with them..."

That always stuck w/ me...though I didn't always heed it. :)

"play the truth" is my favorite little phrase. Paul Wertico said it I think.

My Dad - "Find something you're good at, then try to become the best you can be at it...even if you end up driving a taxi."

Not to lose the meaning of the thread Berhard posted regarding "the world's greatest"...I think my Dad mean't well by the statement. I have found it helpful through life when I found things to zero-in on and it helped me feel that "succesful" feeling. Regardless of how I did, a sense of accomplishment achieved. Father, musician, electrician, carpenter, US Navy Chief...all sorts of applications.

~and~

Dad (again) - "There is always someone richer than you".

Meaning, there is always going to be someone with more money, talent, desire, experience...so on and so forth. So, stay humble...cause' even though you might never hear or see this person, guarunteed...he/she exists.

Andy

I can't think of any positive remarks at the moment but I know that all the ignorant negative comments I ever got in my life only pushed me harder to prove those people wrong.

My old man had a couple that I use every day in my life. I always reach for these words whenever insecurity trys to grip me.

"Don't ever let anybody try and tell you what you're worth."
"Don't ever sell yourself short."

These simple mantras lend me confidence whenever I need it the most.

"Less is more"- my dad, a touring and studio utility musician. Its been my foundation for making music- if the general public can't sing/hum to it, tap their feet to it, or even understand it, it's not going to take off.

One more- "It's all been done before"... Stop trying to do something new and just play what you love. Another quote from my pops...

With regard to drumming: keep time and don't overplay.
With regard to faith: I am third (faith, family, then me).

One thing Elvin Jones said that I live by when playing music is:

'Always play something that will add to the music, not take away from it.'

Elvin is great for quotes. A wise man indeed.

Just take a breath, and breathe. There's no reason to waste your time over-thinking things, you'll ruin them. Sometimes you have to take a step back from it all to understand it

Understand yourself to understand your music. Don't do anything because someone else says it's right, do it because it will benefit you musically, or will benefit someone (don't take this as "be selfish")

Bassists are the scum of the universe

Heres a couple that I've heard from my dad, he comes up with so many of these weird sayings that mean so much!

"Don't get in your own way."
And the second one is one that i just found literally a couple minutes ago written on a piece of paper while looking for something else in my house, its just great...:
"Forget the risk and take the fall. If it's meant to be then it's worth the fall."

When it comes to music, I've lived by the credo of "Don't get too attached." Bands come and go, styles and trends come and go, so you can't get stuck on anything and try to hold onto it forever. You have to be willing to change and evolve as a musician and be open to new things.

I like Bruce Lee.
Many good things he said can be life altering and a great guide...here are two of my favorite.

"Having no way as the way, having no limitation as limitation"
which if you dont then you end up like the next guy
"Here lies a once great man, crammed and distorted by all that classical mess"

Sayings are important but Arnold and his mastery of visualization is just as important.
"I would visualize my biceps as moutain peaks when I would train arms"

In short, visualize your dreams, think positive and outside the box, do not get so traditional that you forget to be yourself and always leave room for God.

One of my favorites came from Joe Porcarro just before I graduated from music school. I asked for his advice on achieving success, and he said; "you can't rush being 40 years old". I'll be 40 in 2008, and a lot of life has happened in the 20ish years since those words. I think I get it.

I am also a big fan of an Anthony Robbins (I believe) quote. "Don't take no from someone who is not qualified to say yes". Meaning, find the person who has the ability to say yes to your request, and ask them instead.

Right, Rob, thats a life pointer too. To successfully avoid all the pessismists, negative energies, nay-sayers, and ignoramuses, and to come throught all of that with a heathy outlook to life.

Water off a ducks back..an accomplishment in itself.
