OK, I'll offer what advice I can, but it's not much I'm afraid...

I live in the Sydney area, and I drum... however, I play for a couple of the churches out where I live, and most of the other drummers that I have contact with here do the same.. so I have almost no experience with the music scene here.. (clubs, etc...)

However.., Sydney is the largest city in Australia.. therefore it stands to reason that the more people there are, the more likely it will be for you to find someone to play with, and places to play. There is a large music scene here with a ton of bands playing nightly... There are quite a few music stores that cater to working muso's and most of them have bulliten boards that offer space for muso's looking for other muso'd. There is also Drum Media weekly newspaper that deals almost exclusively to bands and such.. with a classified section in the back. Each week there are at least 25-30 ads for people looking for a drummer.. (and other sections devoted to other instruments). If you are a decent player, and are willing to work at it, I see no reason why you wouldn't be 'successful' here.

I've heard that Brisbane has a decent music scene, but there are far fewer people, and places to play. So..............

I know it's not much help.. but I've offered what I can. Maybe take a trip down and look around for a week or two.. talk to people and take in a few shows.. Contact Drum Media and get a paper. They probably offer one for Brisbane too...

There is always a church looking for a good drummer too.. Some of them are quite large and have some pretty talented people playing for them..

Peace!

For what it's worth, I'll give you my (slightly biased) opinion...

I've been to Sydney (it's alright :P), I live in Melbourne. My understanding is that the majority of the record labels are in Sydney, while the majority of the live music scene is in Melbourne.

That being said, I chatted to a bass player the other day who told me theres a thriving Jazz Scene in Perth.

I don't know anything at all about Brisbane, but my bro lived there for 6 months, and he reckoned it was fairly quiet.

My opinion. Shoot for Melbourne, but if you're willing to work hard, you can survive anywhere. (bigger is better, if Melbourne's not an option, I'd say Sydney)

On the other hand... Savage Garden came from Brisbane... Ooh.

(i realize you said Sydney or Brisbane, I added Melbourne in myself)

I've heard that Melbourne has a good scene.. I've only been to one place down there and they were doing some sort of 'industrial'(?) show... Honestly, every song was exactly like the last tempo, drum riffs, etc... so it didn't do much for me.. But I've heard good things about Melb.

Keep in mind that I'm a Yank that moved here about 3 years ago, and just returned to playing after a 14 year hiatus. My club/bar/professional experience goes back to the States from the mid 70's through about 1990-91.. However, I'm getting the itch to play again and have started looking for a decent seat...

Good luck!

I did reply but got my wrist slapped for inappropriate language!!!

So can't be bothered to type all that up again, long story short, Brisbane is not the place to come......

I moved to Brisbane from London a year ago and the music scene is very poor

I'm still laughing at this one.. (although, if you are into country, it's solid advice).

What the heck.. Country, these days), is not much different to what was on a lot of AOR stations in the 70's.. Eagles, PPL, etc... Good stuff and fun to play.. but a bit constraining if you want to show chops... (Great for finesse stuff though).

Peace!
