Default Deen Castronovo

Just watched "Journey 2001" dvd. I also saw Journey live this past year. What a beast behind the kit! I am a huge Steve Smith fan also. This guy is amazing! During the live concert I attended, Steve Augeri was ill and another guy was singing lead. Deen sang "Open Arms" from behind the kit! Holy Crap! He sings almost as awesome as his drumming! Massive chops!

Deen is incredible and does not get the credit he deserves ( IMO ). I saw him with Journey and he was a monster!!! He played for the song first but he also let you know that he could play. Plus,a great voice! He could be a lead singer if he wanted.

Oh yes, Deen is amazing...one of my favorites!! I honestly believe he's the most talented drummer/singer combination I've ever heard. His drumming is sick and his vocal is the closest thing to Steve Perry I've ever heard.

I kinda wish he would front Journey and let Steve "the machine gun" Smith rock the kit again. I really think that lineup would be magic!.....(no pun intended towards Deen's drumming; he is phenominal behind the kit)

What a class act this guy is.

Has anyone read his interview in the new Modern Drummer.

Totally humble with no ego at all.

Seems like a very good guy and he worships Steve Smith.

Anyway, good reading.

It was refreshing to hear someone as good as him so incredibly humble and nice.

Also, a GREAT drummer.

I always liked Deen's playing. I started noticing him when he backed Marty Friedman. He was impressive as is. Then I find out he played and sang journey songs. His drum throne has a great talent sitting on it.

I'll second that. I saw Deen with Journey a couple of years back and was duly impressed with his vocal ability while drumming, I already knew that he was a great drummer. He has quite an impressive resume and an extensive discography, Deen plays on many songs that we've all heard and had no idea that he was the drummer.

I'm sure some of you may be interested in a NickelWorks Phantom Carbon Steel Drum Set that Deen once owned... We have an Ebay auction going right now!

Check it out.

Deen has been one of my favorite drummers for years and years.

I first heard of him back when he was doing those Shrapnel records; I used to have Dr. Mastermind, Marty Friendmans "Dragon Kiss", Cacaphony, Tony MacAlpine, etc..

He does such a great job with Journey. I bought the "Generations" album, and the tracks he sings on sound more like Steve Perry than any of the other singers the band has had.
Seeing him on Youtube sing and play at the same time is mind blowing.

I really wish his old instructional tape was available on DVD. I learned a lot of double bass licks off that tape.

I've been going back through a lot of my old Shrapnel/shredder stuff as well, and while listening to Tony Macalpine's "Maximum Security," I was reminded just what a monster Deen is. I just put together a Deen-only playlist for my Ipod, and it's simultaneously inspiring and daunting to hear the stuff he pulls off with Marty Friedman, Macalpine, GZR, James Murphy, Journey and the like. He's truly a drummer for all occasions.

Definitely one of my favorites. Powerful, creative and always seems to be having fun. Of course the Journey vocals are great and just shocked everyone that didn't have a clue about his vocals. Have his instructional vhs, both Bad English, Joey Tafolla, Ozzy, Hardline and Cacophany. Plus the Journey Live 2001. Saw two clinics he did. One w/Dom Famularo..........and Dom is well liked (doesn't do it for me) and Deen was just plain out better and more creative to me.

Mikei, I got the chance to meet Deen about 15 years ago when he was promoting the release of the Sonor Designer series down under.

Everything you describe about him above was correct. He was extremely nice, very happy, very approachable and friendly. And yes, he absolutely RIPPED up at his clinic.
