Default Hot Rods or Cool Rods

I looked and didn't see a discussion about this. What's the difference between the Hot Rod Sticks and Cool Rod Sticks? I was specifically looking at the Pro Mark stick for these (Musicians Friend Prod#'s 443400 - Hot Rod and 443401 - Cool Rod). I'm looking for a quieter sound to work in the small room I have my drums and to save my ears on a day to day basis. Will these work? Also, have you ever played Zildjian sticks? Or are Vic Firth better? JW, Thanks

Hmm I believe that the Cool Rods are a bit quieter than the Original Hot Rods. But I'm not to sure.
For regular sticks I play pro-mark in a range of sizes for different applications. They seem a bit heavier than other sticks but man they last you for a nice chunk of time

Cool rods are thinner and lighter than hot rods. If (in my opinion, this is not a matter of "if" to start with...) you want to save your ears, use hearing protection.

I also believe that the Hot Rods are bought because of the unique sound rather than how it is quiet.

I wouldn't practice w/ those to save your ears...I own a pair of Roots which are basically the Vic Firth equivilant to Pro Marks Hot Rods or Zildjians Mezzo Sticks. See if you use those in practice it's a completely diffrent feel from drumsticks so your technique won't develope as well. If your looking at not killing your ears i's reccommend investing some $$ into custom filtering ear plugs...or at least invest in isolation headphones...I use Roots (Hot Rods) maybe once a year...my schools jazz lab plays a Junior Miss Pagent...and when the girls are giving their speech about how they want world peace and how they do everything...when in reality their all acctually whores...our jazz lab put down some backround music and it has to be really low...so I just use Roots (Hot Rods).

There are also thunder rods and lightning rods. I dont know much about any of the 4 i just know there is a size difference of the rods, and the number of rods is different.

the best hearing protection i've found is what i currently use and that (or those) is (or are) foam earplugs, the type made by gun companies for extra super kick-ass levels of decibels, and all the different rods are different thickness of the dowels that the hot, cool, lightning and so on rods are made out of.
