Default Hello!

HI,
I just registered, so I figured I'd introduce myself. I live in upper Michigan and have been drumming for somewhere around 4-5 years. I'm looking foward to some good drumming/music talk on here. I'll try to get some pics of kit on here in a couple minutes. Here's a preview:

Welcome, beautiful kit. Is that a USA Custom or later modeled Gretsch? What are the sizes?

The ad for the kit advertised it as an '85, but the floor tom is an orphan (hexagon badge), so it might be a different year.

Real nice! Hows the Highwood? How old is it? Good experience with the company? I'm a big fan of their work.

I'm liking the dream quite a bit (It makes me want to try the 24" Bliss mini-cup ride). My avatar is a pic of that cymbal BTW. I'd reccomend the Bliss line to anyone interested in that kind of sound.

I like that snare quite a bit too. I tunes up high quite nicely, but I've ha it tuned to a fatter sound for a while now. It's a good snare, but I don't think it's my dream snare. I want to some different metal shells. I like the Roy Haynes Yamaha sig., but I don't have the money for that.

Highwood- very nice drum. I got it awhile back from a ghostnote.net member. It's served me well. It's vertical grain birch BTW -I didn't say in the specs. Nice size too!

Istanbul- This cymbal has really gotten me interested in Istanbul. It has a nice balance of wash and definition. I think it may be a bit bright for my style, not that is a bad thing, it just might not be 'my' cymbal. I'm starting to look around at rides as of late. I'm liking the agop turk jazz rides as well as the Dream Bliss 24" mini cup rides. Perhaps if I find the perfect ride I will sell my Istanbul if anyone is interested.

-Anyone know of sites where Istanbuls are sold? I know of cymbalsonly.com and vintagedrum.com. Vintagedrum doesn't list specific weights or soundfiles, but is cheaper by a long shot. It makes me wonder if you could find a lower price than cymbalsonly but still have soundfiles/weights.

There is CymbalCellar.com. They have sound samples as well as some used cymbals, but not as big of a selection. Cymbals Only gets my vote though. I'm absolutely addicted to that place. I'm placing another order tomorrow :)

People seem to be interested the bliss, so here is the soundfile from frontrangebronze.com

http://www.frontrangebronze.com/blis...ss1890_859.mp3

Maybe I'll get a soundfile with rivets in a while (I'd have to use my guitarist's mic because I misplaced mine [It was cheap anyway]).

People always compare them to K's (especially the holy vintage K's), and I'd agree with that. If I had the choice, I'd take a KCON over this cymbal though.
To be honest, the thing that attracted me Bliss cymbals is that they are great cymbals at a relatively low price. Having said that, they can still stand up to much more expensive cymbals. They was a blind test that someone did on the cymbalholic forum awhile ago where one cymbal was a Dream Bliss and the other was a vintage K. Half the people got it wrong.

One thing to add- I have my bass drum sitting on top an ACT preperation guide while I wait for my riser. It's really a different sound. Perhaps I'll still play it without a riser for certain things, but I'm really getting a nice warm, full, resonant sound from being able to have the beater hit center.

Very nice kit and nice pics!. The Gretsch drums are almost the same exact sizes as my new Peace Kahuna Bubinga jazz shell pack I just picked up I noticed with the exception of the shallower floor on your kit.

I just made a picasa web album and there are some pics of my drums and the guys I play with if anyone is interested. Feel free to look at the other pics I took too (my dad got a really nice camera so I've been playing with it).
