Default How to get out of a musical rut? (Music in general)

I'm in a severe musical rut lately. I don't mean really creatively on the drums, I mean when it comes to listening to and playing music in general. Honestly I don't listen to music as much as most here do. My CD collection is terrible, consisting of most of the 90's music I listened to growing up with some random things. Some Rush albums, Police, Elvis Costello, Clutch, John Mayer, Govt Mule, a few STP albums, pretty broad, but still pretty slim. Whenever I jam with others and we want to do a cover song, I can NEVER think of anything, and if I do, half the time I know the song, but I can't remember how it goes as far as the drum part is concerned.

So where can I start to not only get more acquainted with music that I already know, but don't "know" drum wise (with the people I play with there is a lot they want to cover). Where would I start to discover new things? Of course buying CD's gets expensive, and I'm sort of on the fence regarding downloading music, so is there an online place where I can pay and have access to a library of music that I can just listen to? It would be great to want to be able to hear a particular album and be able to do so without having to buy it or download it...an on demand thing that again, I expect to pay for.

www.abstractlogix.com will help...

This is Dave DiCenso's now defunct band that I recently discovered, which I thought was great:

Maybe try some online radio stations. Idk where there are good ones because limewire works well for me. Ask around too. Find people with different tastes in music and ask them to copy you a CD or two.

I don't think itunes or any other will let you just listen to songs without paying for them but I may be wrong.

have you looked into Sirius radio? Only $10 a month and the radio themselves are pretty reasonable depending on the features you want. It's great, you name a Genre of music and they have atleast 2-3 stations dedicated to it and you dont hear the same songs every hour like on commercial radio.

The site http://www.deezer.com/ has a lot of music that you can listen to for free, but you can't download them.

You need to know a band name or song name, but it's free and works pretty well. You can also look up different radio stations.

Thanks guys. I'm on www.deezer.com right now and it's exactly what I was looking for. Awesome! You might not be able to download them but it's a start to find things I like or catch up on songs that I just can't for the life of me remember.

I'll check out the others as well.
