Absolutely gorgeous!
I too love Green Sparkle.

Very nice to look at and I'm sure they sound "thunderous."

Speaking of thunder - I bought that book " John Bonham - A Thunder of Drums" a while back - great read.

Mighty mighty nice kit there guy!

You know it's a powerful sound when it knocks the picture hanging on the wall crooked. Very nice set up. I can hear "When The Levee Breaks" just looking at your kit.

I really love this set. It's just like PC McKays(?), whom I'm sure will be chiming in when he see's your kit. My second set will DEFINITELY be a Ludwig. Congrats!

Super nice kit!

The 2 X 4 in front of your kick really brought back some memories. I used to nail one down in front of my kick back in the day. Kept things from walking around.

Some of the club owners were't too thrilled, but it did the job.

Very, very nice kit. Once you make the switch to the heads you described, you'll have the same set up as Bonzo himself! That will be awesome to hear in person. Great cymbal choice as well. You've done your homework I see. Nice kit man, enjoy it!

WOW

I almost bought one a couple of months ago. Then I backed out. Silly me.

I have the Bonham cymbal set up (2002s) and play on the zep set accent series for now.

Looks so amazing!! You took great pics.

Next year will be the year for a new kit. It will be either the Green Sparkle, Stainless Steel or perhaps the new ludwig classic 3 plys. I heard the new ones will have the 26 in 2008!

Congratulations on a MOST BEAUTIFUL KIT!!!!!!

Thanks everyone!

How is the Accent Zep Set? In the begining I wanted to buy one, but I said, let's go for the real thing (even if it's not "THE real thing").

I would love to buy an old 3 ply set one day and I wonder how the new ones will sound compared to the vintage sets.

I got some felt strips installed in my bass drum, and I changed all the heads to Remo Coated Emperor/Coated Ambassador combo. I find it to be little less resonnant than with the OEM Ludwig heads, but now it's just pure Bonham tone and I love it. I'm just having trouble to match the 402 snare. Anyway I tune it, it never seems to get the crisp Bonham sound. Maybe this crisp sound comes from all the process of recording and mastering. Or he used the OEM muffler, wich I don't have.

Still pretty close thaugh.

I just bought the same kit you have!! I now have the classic maple Bonham set as well with all his cymbals!!!!

I think I have finally got his snare sound down. Close enough anyway. I don't know if you have a drum dial, but I have the reso side set at 85 and the batter at 81. The batter is not all that tight. It gets the crisp sound from the tighter reso. I am using a genera dry on the batter now, but it sounded similar when I had the emp on the batter and a small piece of moongel. Had to get rid of some of the ring as the new supras dont have muffler.

Also, I have the snare wires (i put on 42 strand wires) very loose. Just tight enough to get a bit of the sound. Anyway, it sounds closer to Bonhams sound than I have ever gotten it to sound.

My Ludwig maple kills. I love it. It is 10 times better than the Zep Set Accent Kit. However, the Accent Kits sounded really, really good. I was very happy with it.

Wow, I'm happy for you :) My batter head is at about 89-90, and the reso is soooo cranked up the hoop is lower then the bearing edge. But it wont be more than 86-87 on the dial... the ambassador wont get harder... it's pretty thin.

I've never tried to tune that low.. well, when I did, it wasn't close at all.. But I will try it again to see;)

I want pics!!

Try tuning 90 on the batter, 80 on the reso, 75 on the 2 lugs on each side of the snare beds.
Oh yeah, and the snares LOOSE.
You have to remember also, what you hear, probably isn't what it sounds like down range. That was one of the "secrets" of Bonzo's recordings, the room mics.

That's what I think. If you listen to different tracks, you will see that there is a difference beetween them in the way the snare sounds. It never sounds the same!! I think the best way to match everything is to listen to live recordings. You hear clearly how the snare really does sound.. That said, you will see that his snare never (or rarely) sounds the same if you go through the live recordings and bootlegs. So the best you could get would be, something pretty close to what you heard through your speakers, something that happened once, one night.

That's true with all of the drums. Its really noticable on the dvd. His toms on the early recordings (listen to we're gonna groove) and they sound like they are so tight they're choked. With drums this large, to get the feel he wanted at that time, they would have to be really tight. I noticed watching the earlier recording of moby dick, for me to be able to get the stick response he was, the drum would have to be as tight as the snare. I've experimented with tighter tuning on my luddies, I prefer the sound of the 75/80 tuning, but the feel of 85/90 or even higher. It feels better during more intricate tom work. I love listening to the recordings and hearing the ring of the snare. It's hard to hear on most of the recordings, but on songs where he's on top like Levee, you can hear it. When I practice to those songs, and my snare is singing right along the same pitch, I know i'm really close to his. Another factor is also the studio recording itself. Have you noticed how the tuning of the drums on most of the songs fits perfectly. I believe he tuned for each song, not necessarily to a specific note, but the drums really fit the tune on the majority of the songs. Of course i don't do that for my practicing or messing around. I got a fostex recorder and some mics, and have messed around with it. I can't get a nice clean recording, the snare buzz is very noticable, heard on bass notes, etc. In a mix, it would be ok. I really don't have a good room to record in. But, when i recorded a quick Levee intro, it was so close to the sound. My mics aren't that good, they're condensers, that capture the highs really well, but i lose the low end. My fostex only lets me capture 2 tracks at a time, and I usually put them out front, spread out on each side. These things grab too much! I was listening and couldn't figure out where a hum was coming from... It was my gong sympathetically vibrating, i never really noticed it playing, but the mics did!
