Default The Buddy Rich Heart Attack Solo.

Talk about the show must go on. This is the solo where Rich suffered his 1981 heart attack. You can see him age 10 years during this thing. Cathy Rich narrates. Incredible.

Amazing, he is greatly missed,

for many of us he is the reason we stared playing.

I remember seeing him on Johnny Carson, it was the one where both him and Ed were on stage together, I was 9 years old, I vividly remember to this day have the though "I have to do that"

If yo have not seen this or have not watched it in a long time I strongly encourage you to do so.

Also if you have not read the MD interview of Ed I strongly encourage you to do so as well, He talks about this night and it is a very interesting read

That's incredible. In parts of the solo, he's gasping for air and he looks somewhat languid after he finishes playing.

The thing that amazes me about Buddy is that he never let anything get in his way even if he was on the brink of a hazardous situation.

Buddy was one of my first influences.

R.I.P. Buddy Rich

Absolutely...

and when we lost Buddy on April 2, 1987...the mold was broken for evermore.

Never to be filled again.

Truely a "one-of-a-kind" genius!

RIP...indeed!

And never to be forgotten. ;-)

"Old-School" toughness in the extreme. Jesus, what a hard guy.

He is our Babe Ruth.

That poor guy, having to suffer through that.

It sucks for me because he died two years before I was born! I just have some of you, er, "older" people's experiences. Lucky! :P

Well, I guess some kid in the future, when someone like Neil Peart or someone dies, will be jealous of me!

I've seen this video many times before and the whole time I thought he was just tired because he's a lot older in this video. I had no idea anything was even wrong.

I can't watch it. I used to run into BR on the street when I lived around the corner from Buddy's Place in NYC. I want to remember him that way. He was a "Tuff Dude".

Just WATCHING that guy makes me winded. And to think that he was twice my age when he played that solo.....jeez.

Truely incredible. That crowd didn't have any clue what was going on but after you know the story and watch the video you can see there's something wrong after minute 4:30 or so.

It appears to have happened at 4: 25. where he winces, and is breathless pretty much throughout the rest of the solo.

His spirit and determination to blaze through, despite his fatigue and pain, with such ferocity and finnesse is to remind us of another aspect his greatness.

love him, or not,.....what a guy!

Unbelievable, he's having a heart attack onstage while playing a superfast one handed roll with his left hand. He was so amazing, If I have the flu or a cold it's hard for me to play let alone a heart attack. Buddy's determination was so inspiring to see on this video, thanks for sharing that video with us.

I was lucky enough to catch Buddy live a few times here in the Boston area. I had the privilege of meeting him once at either the Jazz Workshop or Paul's Mall I forget which place it was (I'm getting old) these clubs were next door to each other.

Also another night in 1975 my Disco funk band was playing a Holiday Inn lounge gig just north of Boston and the Buddy Rich band was playing next door in the function room. I remember the lounge manager coming up to the leader of our band and saying " Buddy Rich said he can't go on until the noise in the lounge stops" It was the best insult we ever received. Our band was invited in to watch the entire show.

Buddy was the best IMHO

RIP Buddy
