Default Ludwig Man Again

Yes, it's a new record! I had the PDP kit for just over two weeks.

I got this Ludwig kit for $650, I believe it to be from the mid to late nineties, I'm going to check the serial numbers to pin point what year they are from.

The sizes are 9x13 tom, 16x16 floor tom, and a 14x22 kick.
The drums were owned by someone who was in the U.S. Navy band, I know this because he put a Navy serial number under each badge.

.

Back to Ludwig. Good to see it was only "momentary insanity" that set in. Nice kit, and at a good price.

Yes, if this kit was around at the time I was on the hunt I never would have bought the PDP's, although I did like the PDP's. This is essentially the Ludwig kit I'd been looking for, a newer model, very little cosmetic issues and the sizes I like, so ya, I'm a happy drummer.

What didn't you like about the vintage Luddys you had?

Mainly the wrap that was missing on the toms and also a big piece from the kick, there was also a problem with the rivets on the drums rusting. These newer Ludwigs have better hardware and I love the mahogany finish.

Actually I'll say I'm a bit jealous. A Ludwig Classic or Super Classic in a red/mahogany color like that was my dream kit for years.

Hey Stick,
I really like the color on that set, and I know it's a good sounding kit. I think the Pork Pie would have looked better with it though, you should have kept that bad baby.

You may be right, but you can't beat $169 for a birdseye maple snare, I don't care who it's made by.

...Ludwigs always have a very high "awe" factor.

That is a great looking kit you picked up. I was lucky enough to find a killer deal on a Ludwig kit this past summer as well. From one Ludwiholic to another, welcome to re-hab.

I hope that you enjoy those ones as much as I enjoy mine.

I wonder if perhaps the drums were actually property of the U.S. Navy Band at some point. The military is big on placing serial numbers on it's property.

Beautiful kit! I really like the finish.

These are the fab 4 re-issue. The guy that I bought them from found and restored an early sixties kit, so he fire saled these.

Lucky me.

I found your thread and saw them, very nice, how do they sound compared to your DW's?
Do you know how to tell what year the later Ludwigs were made? I looked at the date guide, but it only went up to 1979.

My kit has the telescopic legs, and rubber gaskets under all the lugs, but it's still sporting the old fashioned t-rods except for the two on the bottom of each side of the drum. I'm guessing they were made from the mid to late nineties. One thing I know is that Ludwig still carries this color, and I could eventually add on, oh boy, more things to buy.

...Sticks.

I have no idea on how to date Ludwigs. This kit of mine was sold through Long&McQuade in Edmonton within the last three years. I remember seeing them in there when I was still living in Fort Mac, so they are probably less than four years old.

Comparing the Ludwigs to the dubs is like trying to compare my Son with my Daughter. They are both so different. The dubs are nice big boomy and warm, while the Ludwigs are a lot punchier, and seem (to my ear) to have greater projection.

I am not sure what to do with these Ludwigs. The little voice in my right ear is telling me to sell them , but the other little voice in my left ear is telling me to buy a matching 16x16 floor tom.

I can order a snare from Ludwig in the same finish, these drums are only about ten years old. Ludwig still carries the mohagony finish.
