Default A Weird Little Pattern

I started doing this tonight while practicing. I thought it was a cool pattern and I might expand on it w/ some improvisational ideas it gives me.

I thought the hats playing on the quarter notes would come through better in the recording but they didn't...so it's a little hard to find 1, at first.

very cool groove,.. youre right, the hats are pretty low in the mix. the groove would really rock if you had a quater-note cha-ka-cha-ka-cha-ka, cha-ka going, under the bell ride and snare.
Assuming youre right-handed and playing the ride pattern with your right hand, it might be fun to accent a few of those quater-notes on the hi-hat with your left hand....sorry for thowing in un-asked-for- opinions, but I keep hearing stuff, even if its not there; )..

Thanks man!

It's hard to get an even, consistent sound w/ a single mic and the hats are the farthest from the mic...they just get drowned out by everything in front of them.

Good idea w/ the left-hand accents - I'll often do that while grooving. I've been working lately on throwing a quick 5-stroke rolls and 4-stroke ruffs in on the hats while groovin', which might sound cool here.

I appreciate the feedback, it helps a lot - keep it comin'! Once I nail this down and start playin' it w/ the band, I'll be more inspired w/ some fill & accent ideas as well.

Could you elaborate on what you're doing a bit more? As you said I'm having a hard time finding the one. Cool groove though!

Thanks!

I was trying to break a pattern that's been stuck in my head for a couple of weeks...it was creeping into *everything* I was playing! *madness* I succeeded in doing that much...so that was a good thing.

I posted a similar groove which came out while improvising w/ my guitar player, I posted it up here, it's called "Tango in Hell". This was my attempt at displacing the snare accents in that groove.

As to what is being played..."1" starts on the first ghost note on the snare...at the beginning of the 4-note phrase where I'm doing 16ths between the snare and bass (bsbb = 1e+ah). When the beat circles back around, it gives the illusion that "1" starts on the snare ghost note, making the 5-note phrase (sbsbb) stand out. At least, that's what I hear. While playing it, it was more interesting because the hi-hat note on "2" landed in a way to make it sound like a triplet between between snare, bass, and hats.

Phew, hope that makes sense! I'll note it out in Finale tonight and post it up here.

What is the ride pattern? I think that's confusing me the most.

Could you re-record it but slowed down? Oh wait...I can do that myself in editing *lol* But still, the ride pattern doesn't seem consistent so it throws me off I think.

I didn't think about it while playing...but it sounds like:

1 ah (2) +ah 3 +ah (4) e+ah

...the 2 and the 4 are silent.

Also, I misspoke earlier...when I said "As to what is being played..."1" starts on the first ghost note on the snare...at the beginning of the 4-note phrase where I'm doing 16ths between the snare and bass (bsbb = 1e+ah)."

..."1" starts KICK...not the snare.

The first one's how I heard it initially. However, the fill at around 1:20 indicated, that the ONE is actually on beat THREE. The second one is a revised version of the groove.

Of course I could be wrong and the notation should be permutated by a sixteenth note or something...

It was trance-like. I liked it, and it could be used for something. Keep it in your back pocket for a later time. The opportunity might present itself for use.
