Default Ockeltree snare.

I ordered a 6.5 X 14 Ocheltree snare from Musicians friend. They had them on blow out for $349.00. I think they screwed up because they had the 5.5 X 14 listed at $379.00.

I'd been curious about them for a while now. When I read the description it read "Carbon Steel". My little pea brain thought it meant the drum was a carbon fiber/steel hybrid. Doh!!!

Well, whatever it is it should be here in a few days. I'll let you know how it goes.

Fred,
I hope it doesn't take too long in the delivery of that drum. Someone over at the Tama forum was complaining about long wait periods because of warehouse relocation. It sounds like a killer deal. I'm surprised you even have any money left after your latest shopping spree. Does the wife know about this? lol.

I didn't get a ship conformation yet so I'm not sure what's going on with it.

I have a few snares in a natural finish so the wife thinks it's just one drum. She did comment on the "brown drum" (Brady) one day. I explained that it was an e bay drum and that it didn't cost much. I pointed out that the badge wasn't even metal and was just glued onto the shell. She seemed to be satisfied with that. She complained about how loud it was and suggested I use the tan colored one.

I agreed, and got the tan "one" out. Gotta love it.

That's some funny sh*t Fred. With all the high-end snares you buy, I can't believe you get away with that. So is the Ocheltree brown or tan. lol

I'm gonna tell her that I got bored looking at the tan one so I wrapped it in aluminum foil.

Worked on the Dunnett.

You're not alone dude. My wife has never seen my second set of DW's, she thinks I still own the Blue Oyster Glass ones, but I don't!!! LOL ;)

The joy of being married WITHOUT a joint bank account. If she had seen some of the amounts £££ leaving my account I wouldn't be writing this post man!

I think we need professional help...

See.. that's the advantage of building your own... sometimes I actually get it done faster than people that order them elsewhere... sometimes... lol

Just my opinion on different metals used to make snare drums. =) There's sound clips up somewhere

They're still moving? They've been moving for about 2 months. I waited over a month for something to be shipped out to me that was in stock. I hope you get your snare soon.

I had to call and cancel my MF order Friday night. I ordered sticks on the 11th and didn't get squat from them. The site said everything was "in stock" so I assumed they'd ship it quick.

The woman on the phone gave me the same line, "our warehouse is messed up because we just moved..." She apologized, canceled the order, and was very nice, so I'll order someday again, I'm sure (if I have no other choice.)

Hey Fred,
I was curious, was the item " in stock " when you ordered it?

Yes, I checked the order status and on 8-31 they said it was being packed.

This morning I got another notice saying it's due on 10-15. It's not that big of a deal I guess It's not like I don't have snares to play.

I've had Music123 do that to me. Say something was in stock and then have it not be. Oddly enough though, MF and Music123 merged, which stinks because Music123 took off a bunch of thingsI ordered previously, stands and what not.

I ordered a Gibraltar Riser and it took almost a month to ship as I said. The day I went to call and cancel I got the notice that it had shipped.

I tend to pair up snares. I went to an audition last week and took a 5 X 14 brass and a 5 X 14 wood snare. That way I can adjust the volume to an extent, and have a back up if something breaks. It's super fast to switch out drums when they are the same size.

I would have liked to used 6.5 X 14. I have a wood snare in that size but not a metal one.

It's sometimes hard for me to hit the sweet spot on the snare stand height so that rim shots are consistent. By using the same size drum I don't have to worry about it. I'll have a stand set for 5 inch drums and another for 6.5 inch drums. It just makes it real simple.

OK, you got me. I WANT THE FRIGGIN DRUM NOW!!!

Hey Fred,
Sounds like you need to pick up a Ludwig Supraphonic 402. I'm sure you could think of something to tell the little woman.

I was looking at Black Beauties for a while as well as Supras. I'd like to find a real clean one from the 60s or 70s. I check ebay every now and again.

I had a 5 X 14 Supra back in the day and it was a great drum. I hear the newer drums don't sound the same as the older ones. Opinions seem to vary on that.

That's kinda why the Ockeltree appealed to me. He was around back then teching for some of the most influential drummers of the time. I'm hoping his drum captures that era. Old school meets new.

I do have a 64 Supraphonic shell that I'll be refurbing... but it's going to be a players drum not a collector piece. Completely new coating, tube lugs, and a trick strainer. =) The chrome on the shell is all gone to hell so I figured I'd bring her back to life.

The drum shipped today. No confusion at MF huh?

The luddy sounds cool. Do you plan on rechroming the shell?

Nope.. going to strip the chrome off and use a new coating method (at least in the drum world) It's a pretty cool process where you actually take metal that has been converted to a gas form and apply it to the shell in layers only a few microns thick. Keeps the resonance of the shell up and you end up with a finish that resists fingerprints and scratching. My personal magnesium snare is the first test dummy and I figured heck... while it's getting coated.. why not toss this one in there too since the chrome is so pitted. I'll have to blast the chrome off first and then put the new finish on it.

Here's the start of an acrolite I'm refinishing.. Black chalkboard paint.. the badge is in killer shape for a 67 =)

That's kinda cool. Can the process produce a high luster finish as well?

I'm starting to think that maybe you're out of aerospace or something. You seem to know metal working inside and out.

Nope... I'm a lowly internet manager for a car dealership. I race as a hobby though and I've spent quite a bit of time doing research into metals for drums as I hope to be full time in the business in the near future. :D If you have a polished finish, yes you can do a gloss coating. If you have a satin finish you get a satin coating.. It's so thin it picks up properties of whatever is under it basically.

Don't worry Crazyhorse, he'll take care of you. I know he's been super busy as of late. BTW, I really wish I could tackle some shells like you've been working on. It really looks fun, just been short on $.

Let me know if you need one.. I've got a few laying around. Including a 60's Krupa metal slingerland I haven't made a plan for yet. They're pretty cheap.

OK, The friggin thing finally showed up. This thing is a brute. I'm guessing 19 - 20 pounds. The UPS tag said 21 pounds. The drum has a chrome finish with a knurled center section. It's fitted with tube lugs, die cast hoops, and attack heads. The shell is seem less and has reinforcement rings lathed into it. I'm not sure why. It's a steel shell.

What struck me is that the drum has a very high pitch. I was a little surprised by this because it's a 6.5 x 14. I checked the head tension with a drum dial and it was 90 over 80. That's right about where I tune most of my snares and they seem much lower in pitch. I don't know much about Attack heads so that may have something to do with it.

I didn't have much time to mess with it. By the time it came I'd been playing for about three hours and my arms were turning into rubber. I mess with it on Sunday. I'll post a couple of pictures.

Thick snares actually have a higher fundamental pitch...

So how thick is the shell? Some audio of the drum would be cool. I'm glad it didn't take forever to get the drum though.

Thanks for that. You builders are a wealth of knowledge. I didn't know that.

Here's a couple pictures of the new snare. I got to sweat on it for a couple of hours today.

This thing is pretty loud. It has a nice tone and lots of ring. Outta be a good drum for loud live venues. It reminds me of a Supra.

I tried to get a couple of shots of the inside of the shell. The top and bottom of the shell is thicker than the center section. I'd guess about a quarter inch. I didn't pull a head to measure it.

Anyway, Here's the beast:

Edited to add. That worthless mutt sems to like it too. She has a happy face on.
