Default ? on Bob Burns's drums

Guys, I was watching this video of Lynrd Skynrd performing "Free Bird", and the drummer (Bob Burns) is playing a rather odd-colored drumset, it looks like gray in color.

I probably have watched this video about a million times, and every time wonder what brand of drums he's playing here. Perhaps someone could figure it out. Doesn't look like a Ludwig, judging from the lugs on the rack toms.

Just out of curiosty.. are you sure thats Bob Burns? Aritimus Pyle was the original drummer for L.S. and it sure looks like him. I'm not completely positive, but it looks like Artimus Pyle. I might be wrong. I can't tell what kind of kit either. I'm leaning towards Ludwig, but it might be a Slingerland. I can't tell.

Yep, the drummer in the video is none other than LS's first drummer, Bob Burns. Artimus replaced him in '75. That video was filmed in late 1974 i think, when Burns was on his way out, along with Ed King. Bob played a single bass drumkit, yet Artimus always had a big ol' double bass kit on stage. I think it was the late Allen Collins who said Artimus "could play double kicks and make them sound like machine guns!"

No problem.

I don't know if it's just me, but when I see these old music videos (either on TV specials or on YouTube), and the drumming sounds great, I always have to wonder "just what drumkit is he playing? Is it a Gretsch, Ludwig, or something else?" I guess curiosity gets the best of me there.

Looks like it is one... compared pictures of some Slingerland drum kits with the drum kit in the video, and the lugs and bass drum legs appear to match. Don't know if dove grey (or even primer gray LOL) was a factory color though... Bob may have painted it himself.

Either way, that drumset doesn't even come CLOSE to the one in my avatar...

Yes, its hard to tell on that one. At least you found some matching hardware to at least get a comparisson. Primer grey... lol, thats funny. You never know back in those days. I'm glad you curiosity is somewhat satisfied.

It should be known that in the video they were the opening band for Queen. If you look behind Bob you can see Roger's drumset several times throughout, especially in part two.

Another song from this show:

(at the end you really can see Roger's drumset.)

Actually, if you want to get technical, Skynyrd's ORIGINAL drummer (back in their school days) was Bob Burns, who was replaced by none other than Ricky Medlocke, lead singer & guitarist from Blackfoot & now guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd for the past several years. Then Burns came back, then came Artimus Pyle. Yes, it's true, I heard it from Ricky himself in a radio interview years ago.

The kit that Bob is playing is a "chrome" Pearl kit if I'm not mistaken. The lighting does make them appear to be grey in color but if I remember right they were chrome. Artimus also had a Pearl double kick set in chrome at one time.

Thanks for that Leadfoot! I always thought it was Artimus. I guess its becuase he is the guy who is always in the "Behind The Music" type of interviews. I guess Artimus's claim to fame was that he was in the crash... lol.
