The Sonor will be a better playing drum. Ludwig tube lug's (any tube lug for that matter) do not stay in tune, especially with rim shots, you'll be tuning every song, believe me I have one. You would need 'Tight Screws' to keep it real.

You can see the alignment of the tension rod's in the pic's, Ludwig not straight. Also the (Ludwig) P-85 is a feeble cheap-ass strainer, shame on Ludwig for putting such garbage on a iconic shell. The Sonor is a better made drum, more attention to detail.

I'm not sure, is this Sonor have a 'seamless' shell? Pretty much that's all the ludwig has going for it, the shell.

I agree. The Ludwig is a great drum but there strainer is total crap for crap. If I were choosing between the 2 I would go with the Sonor. Or you could look into the Ludwig with the millenium strainer. I havnt tried it , but it looks better and at least its not the god awful P85.

One thing you need to take into account with that particular Sonor is that its a concert snare drum. While it could certainly be used on a set, its definitely designed for use in a symphonic/perc. ensemble etc. setup. The rims (single flanged hoops absolutely destroy sticks if you do a lot of rimshots), snares, strainer, heads etc. will all be designed with a concert player and setting in mind. If you're looking for a good metal snare, look no further than the Ludwig Supra, extremely versitle drum, and much cheaper than either of the two you suggested.

For the record... tube lugs don't necesarily always go out of tune. I build most of my drums with tubes and I've never had a problem with them staying in tune. =) Also, my drums are rolled and welded and I don't think that is inferior to casting at all. Cast shells can be a bit more brittle because of the alloys used.

Im a Sonor guy through and through, but Ludwig Black Beauty snares are definitely high on my list. They are legendary and record beautifully, especially with a deeper rock sounding vibe.

I intend on owning one at some stage!

OK Les, your obviously a Sonor fan, but your comments about the Black Beauty are pretty far from factual...sorry to say. I own the 14 x 5 1/4 Black beauty, Brass edition, bought around 2003. I've had absolutely no problems with the drum. No tubelug problems, no tuning problems and no strainer problems. These drums come with heavy diecast rims and rim shots are great, snare sensitivity is wonderful and the crack is great. My Brass edition did not come with a P85 strainer by the way. It came with the Millenium Strainer which Modern Drummer loved. The range of sounds I can get out of the drum more than satisfies me. I have nothing bad to say about the Sonors, but slamming the Ludwig Black Beauty or it cousin The Supraphonic, is just talk, like Chevy owners slamming Ford and vice versa. The black beauty has won the prestigious Snare Drum Olympics what 12 years in a row now. There's a reason. I'm not talking about Ludwig's cheap chinese imports, I'm talking about the made in USA Luddies.
As far as tube lugs go, if you have any doubts, go with the tried and tested imperial lug, you can't go wrong.
