Its a small bell cymbal producing a high pitched sound like the bell of a ride which cuts through any music (its very loud). A zil-bel is zildjians model of a bell, although others do them, such as a sabian ice bell or stagg black metal bell (which is a lot cheaper :D )

They're great little cymbals. I have one, and it's a unique and very bright bell tone to add to the arsenal. If you want to hear one, check this out...http://youtube.com/watch?v=W8ZMvjCiy_E
There is a measure of silence at 1:34 ish. The drummer (the great Blake Richardson) hits a Zilbel in that measure. This band is amazing; check them out if you're open minded toward music. They are phenomenal musicians, incredibly advanced and progressive composers, and completely unique, in my opinion. This song may not be the best example of their versatility, but they play a lot of softer stuff as well. Anyway, Zilbels are great fun. Give Between the Buried and Me a listen.

I have a darker version of the zil bell. I have a 7 inch sabian terry bozia signature radia cup. It's like the zil-bell, but darker. I like to use mine for accents, and other creative things. Sabian offers more options on bells, like ice bells, radia's, etc..

My ride cymbal doesn't have a good bell sound, plus you have to reach too far for it. Would it be reasonable to use something like a Zil Bel as a substitute?

Totaly. just remember, the sounds arent exactly the same. I find the bell on a ride cymbal to be a bit louder, if the bell is on something like a rock model, and some sort of ice bell to be equivlet to a regular bell. What ride are you using now????

The ride cymbal is a 22" Bosphorus Masters, used for jazz. Actually, it probably requires a higher skill level than I currently have.

I have a 7" Sabian Ice bell sitting in my gig bag-kind of useless, unless there is a fire drill underway at a gig or rehearsal...
It is a large gob of brass that sounds like a dinner gong-not to be confused with the subtle "ping" of a bronze alloy ride cymbal. (no comparison at all IMO) |

LP ICE BELLS!! Same as a zil-bell, but in 2 sizes. I prefer these to any bell that I have heard :D!

I don't think that it would be viable option as the Zilbel is going to be smaller and wouldn't have the cut that a ride cymbal bell would have. Remember , the bigger the louder. In this instance, the Zilbel would probably be more annoying than anything else.
