I own 10 or 11 different types. Certainly about the easiest thing you can change to get a different kick sound. Go from soft felt to hard felt to plastic to wood.

If you really want that "clicky" bass drum sound that you hear on songs by Slipknot or Pantera, both drummers use hard plastic beaters. Also, they have kickpads (Falam Slam, Evans Patch, etc.) that are either hard plastic or metal to add more click sound. Tuning and the bass drum head selection also plays into that, but that doesn't concern this thread.

I have two that I use, either the standard DW Felt/Plastic (using the plastic side at the moment) or the DW "Medium" Felt beater.

Personally I like Taba rubber beaters... I think they feel better than plastic.

Also I like the sound you get from certain felt beaters. You get more punch than click, sort of.

I always prefer felt myself. I still use the Mapex pedal that came with my Pro-M as it does everything I could want it to do. It has the little tri-tonal beater which is ok, but I only use the felt end.

My mainstay beater is hard felt. Love it. Lots of punch. When I need something with more attack, I have a walnut beater that was made for me that sounds really great as well.

People carry lots of sticks with them, so Im thinking about buying a few types of beaters in my stick bag.

Just for different sounds yunno?
