Default Here ya go DeathMetalConga... Maggy in Black

I just did a run of 6 black Magnesium snare drums and figured I'd show you guys a picture of the first one I put together. These are actually the second batch of prototypes and are a bit thicker than the 2 original ones I put together. They're getting sent to some drum builders around the world for testing so we'll see what they say now that I get some feedback from some of the best guys in the business.

I left this one unvented and even with the additional thickness and powdercoating it's VERY sensitive. Haven't had a chance to really open it up yet since I put it together late last night and I just moved into a new apartment. Going to run by Guitar Center later and slap it on a kit so I can really give it a test drive, in public even.

Yea the 2 mag drums I've done have sounded amazing so far... We'll see about this one in a few hours when I get off of work. I've tapped it a bit and so far so good, can't wait to open it up.

Okay, you have made my drool all over my keyboard again.

Crazyhorse, magnesium sounds pretty exotic for a drum shell. What's next, stave titanium with alternating staves of beryllium? You never fail to amaze me with your pioneering work.

Just how do you make a magnesium shell?

Fijibo: I'll PM ya... but yes, if all goes well there will be a LOT of "Maggys" out there lol

DeathMetal: Same way the $900 titanium drums are made.. rolled metal that is welded... Trick is finding the right alloy. I've looked into having them cast but that's a different alloy that is a bit too brittle for my tastes and the costs put it out of the affordable range for most people. While it would be a cool piece to have my goal is to create exotic drums that are affordable for everyone.

Crazyhorse... I think I'm gonna have to kill you and steal a snare. Don't tell you, though.

Crazyhorse,
Congratulations, the drum looks better then I would have imagined. I hope these will be the first of many in your drum building future. I really love black and chrome together.

Since you have more than one now, and they are black, Maybe the line could be called
MAG-PIES. Or McMags.

lol... It's actually the McKenzie Drums Signature Magnesium.... how's that for a mouthful? In any case Maggy was just what I named my first prototype. Although my fiancee, Callie, says I should have named it after her. =)

As far as the lugs... I love the classic tube lugs. They're a little more expensive than typical diecast lugs but they're very classy looking. Plus I've taken to using them on my wood drums because it shows a level of craftsmanship. These have no inserts so your measurements have to be spot on or the tension rods won't go in properly. Kind of a pain to deal with but it sure keeps you honest when it comes to measuring. Now I am working on having some custom magnesium lugs made up to go with the shell...

Other hardware: These are "stick saver" hoops similar to the old Slingerland hoops. I've got a 68 Slingerland that I love and that's where I picked up using the stick savers over the typical 2.3mm hoops. The throw off is a black Nickelworks throw. By far one of my favorite throwoffs. You may have seen the Gibraltar "R Class" throwoff that looks similar.. it was a direct rip off of this design only it weighs over twice as much. I've got DW True Tone wires on this drum... same as on my other one. Ended up with quite a collection of them from a music store doing a close out.

Oh and on the sound: Finally got a chance to play it Saturday evening as well as listen to a drummer that's much better than me play it. I was worried that it would lose it's sensitivity but that's not a problem at all. It's a touch drier than the original prototype that you heard recorded but it's still got the best dynamic range I've ever seen. You can just touch the head with your finger (notice i said touch.. not tap) and hear the snares respond. Pretty awesome!

Gotta try and get away to get it recorded or let one of the GN guys do it for me. Lexlords went out today and the rest will be shipping this week. Couple of the guys wanted hardware with theirs so I'm just waiting on the stuff to get here from WorldMax so I can send'em along.
