Default Drummerworld chat

Well I notice at work I've become like addicted to checking the forums for new post or threads.(What else am I gonna do at work...? j/k) And I keep thinking of how nice it would be to have a chat room added to drummerworld for spontaneous questions and fun topics of discussion, what are your opinions?

Theres loads of different ways of adding a chat applications to the site, I do web design myself so Bernard if your interested or have any question shoot me a PM I would love to help out in any way I can. Not only would it be nice to be able to have live conversation but i'm sure it would relieve some of the storage and also take care of a lot of the similar questions/topics, instead of post after post of the same questions filling the different sections simple answers can be asked and answered immediately without the annoyance of posts flooding the forums because 20 people want to answer it when someone already did :-D lets leave the forums to actual discussions that should be archived.

Not to be a wet blanket but this has been discussed before and it requires major monitoring to keep the people who do not know how to act from acting like fools as they do in most chat rooms. The moderators of this forum do a great job keeping an eye on the over 10,000 members and keeping things like subject, and language in check. I think to ask Bernhard or any other folk to have to monitor chatters 24/7 is a huge undertaking. I would love it myself, but still don't trust the internet to this point to police its self.

I sit in an office from 8:30am to 5PM PST I know I can mod if need be :P but honstley
I would say this forum is pretty much moderated by itself, I dont think Ive really seen anything vulgar or crude. I'm sure you notice people respect drummerworld and I think the idea of a chat is worth a shot.

The question isn't how can he add a chat to the site, the question is; can he spare the kind of bandwidth it requires. Technically it's easy to implement...but it will chew up considerably more bandwidth.

I'm with ya, I keep the forums open in a tab just about all day at work....

"Ya know, Bobs, on any given day I only actually do about 20 minutes of real work..."

Bandwidth for something such as a java chat isnt anything compaired to a forum archived full of useless posts that need to be sorted and deleted frequently. My guess is there wouldnt be any more then probably 25 people in chat at a time, Ive been on popular forums with over 100,000 members and their chats usually have about 20-30 people at a time, This forum has roughly 10,000 members and probably about 40 really active registered members, I doubt the load on the server would be anything but then again the other 150 guests that don't ever post I'm not sure if alot of them would join chat or not... it all depends it would need a test run before actually being implemented.

I just feel this forum would draw the same types found on YOUTUBE leaving their "positive" remarks on someones drumming ability. I really can't see the need to have mods sit here all day and block users or should I say abusers. The PM feature is there for anyone at any time to send specific questions to anyone they wish. And for this forum moderating itself, again I give credit to the mods for posting, explaining, and enforcing the rules. Just my 2 cents.

This has been talked about many times. Bernhard will chime in sooner or later and nix the idea.

Mad, thats what this whole discussion is about...
The chat would be implemented via IRC in a Java application

I searched the forums and found nothing... sorry if this is a repost just a spur of the moment at work idea .

So I take it you are not for having a chat?... Don't you think something like this would be beneficial?

But i think that it wouldnt be needed on the site. We dont really have to have the chat on the site. If we have our own room off the site then we dont have to worry about traffic control. We will just need a thread on explaining how to get to the chatroom.

I have used it like this for a game that i play online and instead of the chatroom being on the site its just in an IRC chatroom. After a while you get the hang of logging on. But of course IRC works much better with firefox and our Internet Explorer users would have a bit of a hassle.

I also have used IRC for about 10 years, Hrmm whadda ya say mad, wanna put something together and start a channel? IRC is very easy to use.
Maybe that would be the test run, maybe if bernard likes it he can implement it here.

And as far as the bandwidth goes, it wouldn't use any more to run it via Java application on the website, its all connecting to a IRC server hosted somewhere else, it doesn't have to be hosted here at DW.

What do you guys say, if something like this was created and not attached to DW.com would you guys try it out?

I never said I'm not for having chat, I'm saying there's not use in putting in my two cents of awesome ideas on something I have no control over. I also found nothing in the search but I assure you these ideas have been brought up numerous times and have rendered the same response.

As much as I love DrummerWorld and would love to have a chat, one has to be realistic when it comes to such a task and uphold the general forum rules. #1, can you imagine how many people will be logged in at once, especially if there is only one room?

#2, for arguments sake, lets say there are multiple rooms for mulitiple different discussions. Who is gonna make sure the members stay in check? Adding more mods in order to make sure things stay safe can end up kicking a forum in the rear-end, and can give unwanted/needless drama. Let alone, its very risky for a site/forum like DrummerWorld which has an impeccable reputation to risk such add-ons without covering every point prior to installation of such chats.

I would love a chat as well. But, until Bern decides when and how, I can't see it being feasable at this time. Maybe someday when the niches can be solved.

The only benefit to a chat room for this forum would be getting the info faster than we do now. Other than that I see no benefit.

exactly...lol

I think a chat room would be a good idea, and if it did get a whole bunch of not-so-nice spam, just delete the chatroom.

try it atleast..

I can't really think of any info that I'd need instant access to, like 911 drums. Also, you're gonna get whoever is on and that's it. At least with the forum you get multiple responses with a few coming from subject matter experts, not just whatever person decided to chat.

i think it would be cool to be able to get instant response from people, its at a much more personal level (without sounding creepy...), and you can get more peoples opinions faster.

I say no...I already come to this site enough as it is lol

I think its a cool idea, and I'd definitely like to try it out. I don't know about all the technical aspects though, so I can't really add any input there. The only real problem would be is if we did have a lot of members on the chat at once; because I think everything would become so convoluted that information would actually be harder to find then.

Best laugh of the day, thank you. We have discussed and dismissed the idea of a chat room. Thanks.

EDIT from fjjibo: "I noticed that no-one had mentioned that if someone wanted to talk to a member personally the could use the AIM or MSN things under their profile."
