I've just been able to decide on the 10 "grooviest" drummers in my opinion. Here are my picks (in alfabetical order): Gerry Brown Dennis Chambers Steve Gadd Omar Hakim Per Lindvall (Swedish studio drummer) Harvey Mason Jeff Porcaro Bernard Purdie Clyde Stubblefield Dave Weckl Which drummers would make your top 10 when it comes to playing a great groove? /M |

Add J.R. Robinson to that list (and make it 11) ;)

I thought about Garibaldi, but only have "Back on the streets" by TOP and it was a long time since I last listened to it. Remember that I really liked "soul vaccination" when I first heard it. Better get some more TOP-records.
Jordan and Robinson I have barely heard, but I know JR is known as one of the great studio drummers. Better check them out (one of the reasons I started this thread was to get some recommendations on great drummers to explore) Larry Mullen is a really interesting - and innovative - drummer, with a sound and style of his own. I really like U2 - which particular songs do you have in mind? Cobham and Colaiuta were two others I considered, but I haven't heard them enough yet...

Until the end of the world New York Pride Bullet the Blue Sky Stuck in a moment Walk On Bloody Sunday- has sort of a marching feel to it, but still very nice Lady with the spinning head Summer rain Always Also, if you want to hear some Steve Jordan, check out the John Mayer Trio albums "Try!" and "Continuum". Definitely check him out.

This list is nearly perfect. The only glaring omission from my point of view is not having Steve Jordan on there; he's an absolute master at playing understated yet seriously groovy beats.

Kz and bball: Harvey Mason and Steve Jordan are up there, but probably as 11 and 12.. that's just my personal outlook. I mean.. I would have wanted to put Benny Greb up there too, but, y'know.. I only had room for 10. :)

I would rather just list 3.
Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Starks, and Cissy Strut "Yo Jabo let's get funky!" |

I believe you mean Zigaboo? There's no drummer named Cissy Strut. ;)

Yeah Ziggy, wasn't Cissy strut a nickname though for him? I thought it was.

If you've heard anything by Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Madonna, Steve Winwood or Chaka Khan then you've heard JR.

Oops, forget what I wrote about not having heard JR - just found out he's the drummer on "We are the world" - and the one behind that mean "I'm so excited" - beat (always wondered who that was, had a hard time trying to make that groove when we played it 8 years ago)
Really glad I started this thread - already widened my "great drummers" horizon... Hope you don't mind Jason - discussing "best of"-lists is one of the best ways to find new musicians to listen to. :-) /M
