Is it worth getting to improve fast double technique? |

It comes highly recommended by Jason Bittner, so yeah, try it.
Also, try looking through the Reviews sticky in Drum Technique. It might be in there somewhere. And, to top that all of, Derek HIMSELF is a member here, so try PMing him to ask questions. |

I have it. i think it's a great book. great independence exercises. it mainly focuses on blasts though. but i like blasts :) good play alongs too. the only problem i have with the play alongs is that they're not loud enough :-\. but yes, good book :)

I really want this book. Derek is a great drummer and it would be interesting to practice some of these concepts I imagine.

Of course, expanding one's style and ability in music is not important. Only the greatest musicians stay in one area of expertise, and that's clearly why they become renowned.
Thankyou ronin for your oh so tasteful, and let's not forget deeply thought lesson in music and culture. |

I saw Derrick recently at a clinic in Winnipeg and he was really cool and quite impressive. He showed off some really cool independence stuff and some bizarre skills with double hi-hats and double bass.
I am not a fan of the bands/genre he is famous for but he is certainly a very skilled player and I would think that his book is worth while. The one criticism I would have is that when he was playing at top speed, the volume just isn't there. This is not to do with him, just the limitations of the human body to perform that fast. He talked about this and mentioned that rather then allowing the volume to drop during the blast sections and then come back up during the obligatory half-time section in any death metal song, he just plays everything at a medium volume. This just doesn't translate to the powerful delivery I would expect from a "metal" band. My opinion, whatever. What would be more interesting is seeing someone like Roddy apply his speed to a different genre like jazz/afro-cuban/ or a really crazy blues/psycho-billy band. That would be cool. Although I feel guilty recommending it - because authors don't get one red cent from used books - but a good site to find used books is AbeBooks (Google it). It is a network of thousands of used book sellers around the world that often have very obscure and current titles much cheaper than buying new or from eBay. I buy all kinds of drum books from there and even with shipping they are a better deal. |

I was hanging out with him in my local drum shop back home where he works. He was talking about a clinic he just finished where he was with JoJo. Derrick is an awesome drummer with great feel for all styles and he's a really cool person to hang out with.

I'm actually SUPER curious as to reading this book. I don't play blast beats and I don't listen to that type of music at all but for some reason I'm curious into them. I guess it's cause of watching that guy play them.

DEREK RODDY, spelling!!
MAN!! That's pretty close minded dude!! Derek is an awesome drummer, and he's not just a one trick pony either. This is merely ONE of his many facets of drumming. He's also a really nice guy, yes I've met and hung out with him, so I'm not just saying it for his defense. I have a basis for saying so. . . . __________________ Most respect the badge, but all fear the drum.
