Default New Snare - Have I done the right thing?

Hi Folks

Yesterday I bought a Pearl Reference snare. Wasn't really sure which size to go for so I bought the 14" x 6.5" 20 ply job. It was horrifyingly expensive here in "rip-off Britain" so I really hope I've done the right thing.

Anyone out there got one of these drums that can tell me what it's like? I guess I'll find out in about 3 days but just a little nervous.

Cheers
Chris

can't go wrong with reference snare. I'll definitely buy the 14/5 one, but 14/6,5 should be great also.

what's it like? it's heavy ^^

Why ask when it's already too late? :) I'm sure the Reference is a killer.

Kumu, i love you. You're so brutally honest. Any way, the Reference snare has been called by many big drummer (albeit with endorsement contracts) the snare to which all should be compared. You made the right choice. Price wise? I would have floated around on ebay...

Hi D.C (and Kumu!)

Yeah - thanks for the response. I know I was a little late asking but I couldn't resist buying the drum when I saw I could get it for a pretty good price compared to the RRP from Pearl. There was one on Ebay for £419 but it sounded like it had been lying about for a while. I managed to get one directly from Pearl (I should see it on Friday) for only £50 more than that. Not too shabby.

Just wanted a little confirmation from those of you who know that the drum is a good buy/investment. Can't wait to get my grubbys on it.

Cheers
Chris

Amazing snare, yet it really is extremley expensive. But i think it is worth it for the sound in the end.

and thats the worst part of any drumming purchase- if you can make it through that, you're golden!

that was a worthy investment though, I'm sure you'll absolutley love the sound of it.

The kit sounds absolutely awesome, although in my own particular case I'm having trouble getting the toms to sound "right". Rather than being something wrong with the kit though, this is simply a case of my being an ignoramous when it comes to drum tuning.

As soon as my snare arrives and I've put heads on it, I'll take pics and give you some sort of feedback as to how it sounds.

Cheers
Chris

Ken, if you want your drums to sound "right" with respect to proper tuning, I recommend getting a Drumdial tuner, or something similar...I have difficulty tuning by ear as well, but the DD tuner takes all the guesswork out of it, and makes your drums sound , well, like properly tuned drums! (lol). Congrats on your new purchase!

Hi Thumper

OK - but here's the rub.... how does one know at what dialed number is what "good" tone on the drum. Let's say I wanted to tune my 14x14 to C - how would I know, without listening to the drum and playing the C note on either a bass guitar or piano, whether I had the right number on the drum dial?

I bought a drum dial - cost more than £70 including VAT which I thought was outrageously expensive - but bought it anyway. It's great but once again - how does one know that if, say, I runed the resonant head on the 14x14 to "65" on the dial, whether that would be the "right" note.

OOPS - I think we just went off topic in here. This is supposed to be about the Reference snare drum - which I think will be arriving tomorrow - YIPPEEE! Can't wait.

Cheers
Chris
