I'm a novice "reader". Is there any software that you are using/is available that will allow me to put notes/rests etc in a measure ( reflecting bass, snare, HH, toms, cymbals etc) and then allow me to hear what I just put in? Another question, is there any software that you know that will allow scanning of a drum chart and convert it to sound? Sort of like "Character Recognition" for music charts? thanks in advance for your input. Best regards 75Sling |

I'm not aware of any software that can do what you described in the second part but as far as popular notation software, try these links:

Hey guys, I had the same question as 75sling. I'm also a beginner reader. Are there any FREE programs out there you can reccommend or do they all typically cost $$?

couldn't you just use a drum sequencer? Create your midi and away it goes.

a lot of recording programs like Cubase and sonar etc..have MIDI drums that will allow you to build drum grooves.
If I am reading correctly here is what 75sling is saying, and please correct me if I am wrong. You see drum notation in a book or say in modern drummer. It is a lot faster to hear it as you are trying to read it, it usually comes together easier when someone says, "oh and it sounds like this....". So if you could simply add notes with a click of a mouse to a plank page and then click play to hear it the learning curve would substantially be shortened. It would also make you a better reader and writer much faster. I want one and I have been reading for years ;-) |

Finale is my go-to program for notation. I believe it will also convert scanned scores into scores in Finale, but I haven't tried that feature yet.
