It looks like you've got something on your ride in the video... what and why?

That was pretty cool.
Comment on youtube... "Oh, and that's my coat you see hanging off the ride, damping it down.. I was in a ?uestlove mood that day.

Quite liked it, pretty tight. The bit with the ride on the offbeat went on a little too long IMO but still great!

Very nice.
Great inspiration for me! I am working on some funk grooves with ghost notes and now can't wait to get home and try some more. Hopefully within a year, I can be where you are!! Great stuff with the ride on the up beats. Mike

Lovely grooving Kz, you've got a nice dynamic balance between the voices in your playing.

Nice job. Good ghost technique in the first groove as well as a strong 8th note pulse.

The Good-
Nice playing and great dynamics. Playing the 16th notes between your HH and your Ride and leading with your left hand was a great example of your ambidextarity(I hope that was clear). The challenge- There are couple of parts in the begining where you are playing some ghost notes on the "e" and the "&" that slightly stalled your playing. I suggest practicing at very slow tempos to clean this up a little. There wasn't a huge stall but enougn that I could hear it and feel it. Keep up the grooves. J. |

I hear what you're saying JR, but I was doing that heavy drag on purpose, because the groove I was emulating - "Pete Rock" with ?uestlove drumming - has the hits all over the place, meaning if you were to put it on a grid it would look sloppy. Plus, I prefer when playing for myself for things to dance around and fall somewhere in between a 16th and triplet rather than be spot on all the time -- I think of it as channeling Billy Martin's groove.
However I don't want to sound close-minded to criticism, so if you think what you heard were honest errors then please list the time(s) when they happened - I'm quite curious about this. And thanks for the comments! This is the song I was playing. I could listen to it until the end of time..
