Bonzo was an amazing drummer, but I think this guy wants more of the "blast beat Doubl kick stuff".

Mind you, Thomas Lang does some cool stuff with his feet, and I don't think he's metal.

And Mike Portnoy should be added to the list of metal drumming, mind you he's prog.

Christ, not many metalheads on here. Or maybe I'm a bit of a kvlt black metal elitist, but at least I can admit it. Here's some albums that have good (or typical of the genre) drumming; I'll try to give a good variety:

Black Metal
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Moonsorrow - Suden Uni
Obsidian Gate - The Nightspectral Voyage (Symphonic black metal, excellent use of keyboards and such)
BATHORY - HAMMERHEART (Nothing amazing from a technical standpoint, but oh so powerful.)
Thyrfing - Urkraft
Imperial Crystalline Entombment - Apocalyptic End in White (Don't mind the lyrics, it seems they're meant to poke fun of the frostbitten black metal stereotype.)
Absu - The Sun of Tiphareth

Death Metal
Behemoth - Zos Kia Cultus (imo their best album)
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Death - any album
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten (grindcore/death metal, definitely worth mentioning)
Nile
Atheist - Piece of Time (One of my favorite cds of all time, go for Unquestionable Presence next if you like Piece of Time)
Decapitated - Winds of Creation

Progressive/Thrash/Other
Watchtower - Control and Resistance (Amazing album, even non-metalheads will appreciate the innovative drumming and time signature changes.)
Spastic Ink
Cynic - Focus (great progressive death, some jazz elements in here as well)
Pain of Salvation
Pagan's Mind
Dream Theater - "Images and Words" or "Metropolis pt. 2" (I dont' care for their newer stuff)
Ensiferum - Iron
Early Megadeth
Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
Mournful Congregation - The Monad of Creation (One of the few doom bands I like)

Finally, listen to "In the Glare of Burning Churches" by Graveland and rejoice in the fact that you're not as bad as that drummer. I've probably missed some classics here, but oh well, that's a good list to get you started.

Three cd's that have always remained great to me are "Impossibility of reason" by Chimaira, "Iowa" by the mighty Slipknot, and "Heartwork" by Carcass. I would also recommend Morbid Angel, Otep, Machine head, Lamb of god, Arch enemy and of course Pantera.

I am from the 70's 80's and this is just what I would listen to to get pumped= Y & T "Earthshaker", any old Thin Lizzy, some Aerosmith for fun and Van Halen.
I really like Rage Against the Machine and Queensryche.

heres some of my favorite metal bands..... ((((opeth, dream theater/liquid tension experiment, symphony x, mastodon, manowar, lamb of god, dragonforce, james brown, sonata arctica, pantera, nile, kamelot, children of bodom, angra, arch enemy, thee inches of blood, trivium, iced earth, iron maiden, judas priest, megadeth, old metallica, anthrax, testament, rhapsody of fire, in flames, ensiferum, wintersun, korpilkaani, and of course black sabbath.)))) im sure there is more but my memory kinda sucks and it took me like ten minutes just to search my mind for those ^^^.... anyways.. great drummers i find awesome to play along to is (martin lopez of opeth), (mike portnoy of dream theater), and (chris adler of lamb of god). alot of those power metal bands ^^^^ like (sonata arctica) are good for pretty relaxing constant double kick that isnt too fast. (pantera) is really good one too to try and lay down some power with your drumming. im still working my but off to play along to nile but their drummer if or if not he is still in the band is (george kollias) and hes pretty cool you should check him out. and (derek roddy), he used to be in nile. both veeery fast. sorry about the brackets i thought it might be helpfull to make names stand out a little more because i wrote alot. anyways i hope this helps.

There are so many genres of metal it is hard to narrow it down. You may also want to check out some progressive metal bands like Fates Warning or Dream Theater.

Killswitch engage is killer the drumming is good also there newer stuff is probably a bit easier than there old albums due to different drummers they are on there 3rd drummer rite now in fact.

LOL! James Brown? correct me if im wrong, but isn't he meant to be the "Godfather of Soul"? never noticed any "brutal double-bass chops" in "sex machine" or "papa's got a brand new bag"...

A couple of people have said "old Sepultura". The old albums are arguably better but some of Igors best drumming is on Chaos AD, Roots and Against.

I havent seen Darkane mentioned yet, their last album Layers Of Lies is nothing short of a masterpiece and Peter Wildoer is an incredible drummer.

Look out for Coprofago, they mix metal with jazz and IMO do both well.

Dragonforce is a little hard to start with if it's about learning the double bass techniques involved in metal.

Some people claim that Iron Maiden was a metal band, but that's not true; there was no umlaut in their band name. That's a no-go for an 80's metal band...

I'm not really into the hardcore metal that most listen to such as Nile, Dimmu Borgir etc. So my suggestions of bands and artists might be a bit different to most but definitely worth checking out if you're wanting to branch out into other types of metal.

Whitesnake
Axel Rudi Pell
Angra
Hellyeah
Dokken
Dragonforce
Dream Theater
Gamma Ray
Helloween
Heaven and Hell/Black Sabbath
Iced Earth
Jorn Lande - Also check out his albums with Russ Allen from Symphony X
Kamelot
Killswitch Engage
Machine Head
Masterplan
Racer X
Saxon
Shadows Fall
Sieges Even
Symhpony X

Not 100% sure if they're all metal but iTunes is telling me they are so they're on the list haha. More I could've added but I'm sure they were considered metal back in the day(bands such as Warrant, Motley Crue, Skid Row etc. that were part of the whole hair metal scene) but compared to today's standards don't think they'd be what you're looking for.

Well, as long as this thread is still going, I suppose I'll put in a plug for Steve Flynn of Atheist (an early technical death metal band from Florida). He has one of the more unique styles in metal, and their record label just remastered/reissued/whatevered all three of their albums, so they should be easy to find. I only own Unquestionable Presence at the moment, but one of the many bonus tracks on it is the drum and bass only recording of Mother Man, which gives you a close-up of his ridiculous style. He sticks mostly to bass-snare-hihat-ride, which I think is cool. You could probably play all of the albums on a 4-piece, and he doesn't use much double bass either. I really can't recommend him enough. Probably my favorite metal drummer.

Default Re: Metal Bands, suggestions?

Underoath is an evolving band that describe themselves as Metal-Hardcore, so they won't be loved by pure metal freaks and that is why I like underoath, because its more a band that compose and arrange there music than a couple of amazing tech musicians just soloing non stop. So underoath is now back in heavyness but still mor hardcore, if your goal is to practise drum composition and arrangment go and play some but if you just want to impress and be technical all the way go for pure metal. Metal has gone wide and has splitted into other scenes styles are combined to creating new styles, killswitch engage is a big influence of Underoath, you can look at Dillinger Escape plan. Black Sabbath will not teach you much on drumming this guy had his own style and it was rare at that time and now Ward's style is more used in Hard rock than metal. Metal has gone fast with the influence of punk. Punk as grew more harcore and more heavy with hard rock etc etc. UNderoath is to me one of the best modern band, you can look at them in studio right now live everyday on www.stickam.com/underoath and www.stickam.com/underoath2, To resume nobody is wrong: to each is own style, I prefer Metal-Core from underoath than pure metal but if you want pure metal listen to the pure metal fans they knows better than me those metal bands.

Cheers and love music more than a style

I suggest you buy "Ride The Lightning" by Metallica, its one of my favorite albums, and IMO the best metal album ever made.
