Default Zildjian or Sabian?

I've been thinking about getting Zildjian cymbals. Could somebody tell me some positive things about them?

they offer some of the best sounding cymbals in the buiseness. their prices are pretty decent. they can be very versitile. but search for zildjian or sabian on the forum, there are a million and 5 of these threads out there. but overall i'd go with zildjian over sabian.

There are a lot of threads with this question, as well as many more specific topics relative to zildjian and sabian on the site. just bust out the search lol.

I'll echo what the other two said, search and this thread needs to be in Gear/Cymbals anyway. For what it's worth I was always a Zildjian guy but when I went back to redo my cymbals I ended up with mostly all Sabians. I'd just say go let your ears decide not the name on the cymbal.

I prefer Zildjian, but the Sabian AAX cymbals rock.

There are other companies besides these too.

There is Paiste, Bosphorus, Meinl, Saluda, and probably others i am missing.

I have heard absolutley great things about saluda and bosphorus so really look into those.

Zildjian are good cymbals.
Sabian are good cymbals.
Bosphorus are good cymbals.
Paistes are good cymbals.
Istanbul Agop are good cymbals.
Dreams are good cymbals.

What do you prefer I don't know.

Basically, if the cymbal has a decent price tag, it is probably of quality, but it all comes down to if you like the cymbal or not.

So basically to sum up -

head down to your dealer, bring a stick, and get going!!!

there are thousands of users here who like zildjian, and thousands sabian, at the end of the day, they all make fine cymbals, its down to your ears!!!

good luck.

first research what companies offer and search around here for some opinions

then go to a store and play some cymbals from different companies.

now make your choice

happy cymbal hunting!

Zildjian are great cymbals. I started off playing Zildjian and I still play mostly Zildjian cymbals on my kit. When I was working at a music store, I fell in love with Sabian cymbals, and I only have one pair of Sabian hi-hats now, but I still love their effects cymbals, chinas, hats etc.

This being said, I would highly encourage checking out both of those, doing research etc. However, do not discount Meinl, Dream, Bosphorous, or Istanbul. These are also quality cymbals. I have about 10-12 Meinl cymbals on my kit now, and they just kick butt. IMPO, I don't like Paiste -- not to say they make bad cymbals -- I just think they are a little too pricy.

One final note -- in my 12 years of being a percussionist, I don't think I have heard a better crash cymbal than the A Custom Crash and Medium Crash lines. They just have so much to offer for a multitude of gigs (I used them on pop, rock, metal, and progressive projects ever since I bought the 17" Medium 2 years ago)

I hope this helps. Basically, go into music stores and start hitting cymbals. Find what sounds good. I don't think you should limit yourself to one brand, barring endorsements. Like I said, I use Zildjian, Sabian, Meinl, and Wuhan concurrently, and they all seem to sound great together.

Continue the persuit of awesome-sounding gear!

...When I first started playing the drums,

There was a mail order cymbal shop out of Medicine Hat Alberta (Anderson Music) that had the best prices I could find on Sabian cymbals. Since then I have had a preference for Sabian. I have owned a few Paistes, and Zildjians over the years, but my basic cymbal setup has been Sabian. I am more familiar with their lines, and see no reason to switch to another brand.

A buddy of mine back in B.C. was a diehard Zildjian basher. Between the two of us, we had a huge pile of cymbals, and we would often lend/borrow/mix and match to suit whatever curiosity we might have regarding sound and compatability,

For the most part, unless I knew for certain which cymbal was which, I could not pick out any major distinction between the two brands. I would bet that most people, in a blind listening test would have a hard time picking out a Zildjian from a Sabian, as they are essentially the same formula, same manufacturing, from the same family.

I know the story of the Zildjian Family feud that brought about the birth of Sabian, but I often wonder if that feud is as real as it has been reported to be. I do not know the exact numbers, but pulling these numbers out of my arse, lets say that between Sabian and Zildjian they hold 75% of the world wide cymbal market. If either of the two did not exist, I doubt that either on its own would hold that share.

Zildjian has been making cymbals for how many Years? I find it hard to believe a family with a heritage and pride in tradition that has been passed on from generation to generation really has this bad blood between them. If Sabian and Zildjian as companies push each other through market share, the Zildjian Family still comes out a winner.

That being said, if I was to start from scratch, I would give Zildjian a serious listen, but as it now stands, I am pretty much stuck on Sabian.

Good luck with your cymbal quest.

Barry

Don't limit yourself to just Zildjian or Sabian, I would recommend that you look at all the companies, not just 2.
