Default Fat Elvis' Brand New Ludwigs......!

Yes yes yes..... yet another kit. Another deal I could not pass up... i have a problem. The good part about this deal is i actually am going to wind up paying no out of pocket dollars on this kit (selling other stuff).

here is the skinny:

Ludwig Classic Maple in Champagne Sparkle (yum).

22x14 kick
13x9 rack tom
16x16 floor tom
14x6.5 snare

All heads are the coated Ludwig Medium heads (emperors? ambassadors?) with Ludwig Medium clears on the resonant. Hardware is the retro hardware with the curved spurs that slide into the kick drum.

I will say that the hardware is less than impressive. The floor tom clamps and legs are thin and not at all like the beefy starclassic and DW hardware that i am used to, however i do think it is appropriate for this kit -- just seems so classic that way. I actually want to outfit it with DW6000 flat base hardware, which i think will keep it simple and classy.

And here's the deal: $1069 before tax and such....out the door it was $1166. Tipped my sales guy $50, so basically it was $1216. It is beautiful. I have not played it yet -- it sits here in my living room beside me right now. I will be gigging it on saturday, which i cannot wait!!!

a few pics for now -- more when i gig it this weekend. Sorry abotu the quality of the pics -- damn phone cam -- does not do this beauty justice. I will keep this kit with coated heads -- i run clears on my other kits and i like having the difference. Woohoo!

dingbat? larlev? the ball is in your court!

Congrats on your new purchase, and keep finding those great deals. Things have been getting more and more interesting since your first sonors, so keep pace!

I think some problems are not meant to be solved...

Really nice. Classic sparkle on traditional sizes. Congrats. And then the fact that you sold some stuff to finance the kit. Just icing on the cake. Sweet!

My cup runneth over with jealousy. Another great sparkle kit, and it gets a road test this weekend. Keep the catalog going. I love watching other people spend money, especially on good deals. Is this kit used or new, can't tell. If used how old?. Have fun. I realize the title is "... Brand new Ludwigs." but didnt know if that was new to you or NEW.

Beautiful kit, though I'm not at all surprised by the sparkles. That kit really does have a nice classic look to it, and definitley stick with the coated heads- it looks sooo nice. Bet it sounds sweet too.

Pretty good ... for plywood (just kidding!)

Nice set, real vintage look. If it had modern hardware it wouldn't have the classic vintage appearance, so that's one of the trade-offs. I could see that set on the stage on a cruise ship or a Vegas club. The detailing is excellent, like the strip of sparkle on the hoop and the custom claws. Amazing price and classy to tip the salesman.

But don't just tempt us with halfway drum porn - set the kit up and go all the way and show us the pictures.

As for you're "problem": you're addicted to drum gear, but that is not a problem, except with the wife.

Nice looking kit. BTW, your stripped kit is really super cool looking too.

I'm glad to see Ludwig getting back into the game. They seemed to be out of the lime light for a while.

GC has been blowing the Ludwigs out. Get em while you can guys.

Nice find. Enjoy!

Thank all of you for the kind replys. I am very lucky to get this kit and have 3 fantastic kits (and one beater). But hey, even the beater is a love :)

Here are a few answers. More pics to come after my gig on saturday. I have no room to set this up right now, so I will have to wait until the gig.

yeah it has been interesting since my second kit (the sonors). I think they put an addiction in me that i just cannot control. I have bought 5 kits in less than 2 years and still have 4 of them. I love them all though. It has much to do with the good people on this board that helped me make buying decisions. It is nice being in a place in my life that i can do this sort of thing :)

Thanks! They sound FANTASTIC! I have only played them in the store, but i have done so on 3 different occasions. The toms sound clean and clear, but have a traditional tom sound -- closer to a jazz tom sound (like a buddy rich vibe) than do my dubs or starclassic. But then again, all of my drums sound very different from one another, however all sound incredible!

Four....yep.... for now. :) Yeah I think I am going to dump the Rockstar to my bass player. I am selling him the set fully outfitted (2 toms, kick, snare, all the hardware -- which is great hardware, Tama Pedal, Throne (nice throne.... either pearl or DW) and barely used Paiste PST5 cymbals) for $450. I think it is a good deal. I will use some of that money to purchase new DW6000 flat hardware for the luddys!

Brand new -- from guitar center. It was in their store stacked for most of its life. However it was set up on the floor for the past 6-8 weeks or so. So the heads do show some use, but very light.

Well, I have a while to catch up to him, but I dont mind being his "mini me" :) -- i would say that a brady will make its way into my life one of these days.

yeah it is a 13x9 -- just a weird angle. Look at the snare depth -- that is 6.5, so it should help gauge depth. It is a stock set of sizes from Ludwig -- here is the link to massmusic that shows the set options:

Yeah -- my GF (practically my wife) and my daughter dont get it. They saw the set and said immediately "what??? its exactly the same as your DW!" (which is also champagne sparkle). What could I say? Hah! I told them it is my favorite drum color -- and honestly had it been red or blue sparkle, i most likely would have passed.

When I saw this kit, all I could think of is how perfect it would be for my lounge gig. I love the classic look to it -- the maple/sparkle inlay on the hoops, the traditional spurs, etc.

I blame you for this luddy. :) had you not gone and got one from GC, i would have never asked myself, which got the ball rolling. I am glad I could have scored this deal -- and it was the last Ludwig Classic Maple in any GC in vegas! Sweet!

You have one of the worst cases of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) ever! I don't go on the forums for a while, come back, then bam! Another kit! Haha, but who ever said that was bad. If you find that you need a little space, let me know, I'll be happy to adopt a kit. =) Congrats, those are some good looking Luddies.

Default Re: Fat Elvis' Brand New Ludwigs......!

and now a review:

i gigged the kit last night and here are some of my impressions. Most of them will be an opinion as this kit comparred to my other two kits.

set up and tear down
wow.... easy peasy lemon squeezy. The bass drum was easy to set up, and without the spurs (just rubber feet), it was easy to reposition. All of the drums went up in no-time -- and it was nice to gig with a non-virgin -- it went together so quickly. Also the style of the kit made me actually want to go with a simpler cymbal and stand set-up, which made things all that much quicker. Basically set up and tear down was the quickest it has ever been.

The look
well, you can see from the pictures that the kit looked incredible. It was very comfortable to play and was quite striking on stage. What's more, it took up very little space.

The sound
Funny thing was is i was actually expecting it to be close to my DW in sound (both maple). But what I found is that it sounded completely different from both other kits of mine.

Both toms sounded very "live" and had a TON of resonance and projection. They felt very jazzy to me and had a very classic tone. They did not sound at all like my other kits -- in fact i would say that the DW is closer in sound to the starclasic than the ludwig. They were super easy to tune -- i found the sound I was looking for quickly and they blended together very well.

The snare -- well it was amazing! The best snare I have probably every personally played. It had such a crisp snap, brushes sounded incredible, rim shots were loud but never annoying -- overall it was perfect. And I usually do not like wood snares, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE this one. I would say that it is the highlight of the kit, but it really is equal to the rest of the kit -- it sound that good.

The kick drum was a CANNON. Holy crap i was not expecting that -- i replaced the stock batter head with a superkick I and boy was I shocked. It had so much projection...wow. My DW and Starclassic do not have as much of a kick voice as the ludwig. Outside of the SK I and the stock resonant head, I ran it open (no other muffliing). WOW.

All in all, it is an even better kit than I imagined. The hardware, once a concern, turned out to be perfect -- and LIGHT. It made carrying the drums and the hardware bag a sinch. I would highly recommend the Ludwig Classic Maple -- especially if you can find a great deal. I am a lucky man. :)

Very good work Elvis. I do wish I had something matching your income and availability of such great kits! Ludwig seem to be making a come back of late, and if everything that you say is true, then I can really see why. It just makes you wonder what would've been if they hadn't had such a huge down turn in the 80's and 90's. Be very proud of those drums my friend, you have a lot to be proud of. You're very lucky.

I'm so jealous right now. Kit looks stunning. I'm going to go search "ludwig" on ebay australia and the trading post now....

Awesome looking kit!! I used to own a Ludwig kit and I wish I had hung on to it. C'est la vie. Keep on rockin' in the free world!
