Default My New Ludwig Classic Maple Kit

Hi,

I already posted some pics under the "Introduce Yourself" thread but thought I should post some here as well.

My kit: Ludwig Classic Maple (8x12, 14x14, 14x18 in Black Oyster Pearl), Gretsch 120th Anniversary Round Badge Snare (5x14 in Black and Gray Duco), 21” Istanbul Sultan Ride, 21” Bosphorus Traditional Ride, 14” Zildjian New Beat Hi-Hats, DW Flat-Based Cymbal Stands, Vic Firth AJ3 and AJ6 Sticks, Regal Tip Jeff Hamilton Brushes.
I tried to marry the old-style with the new-style. Be-Bop sizes and wrap finish with new hardware. I love my kit; sounds great.

Some pics...

Congrats on the new Ludwigs! I agree with iceagecomin with all the ludwig posts here lately (i finally posted mine up!).

Your setup looks so sweet and vintage, especially with the flat based stands to compliment the setup. You should've gotten the classic spurs on the bass drum (I ordered my Ludwig maple kit that way).

I'm just curious, did you get that tom rail mount from Ludwig or did you put that on yourself? I remember seeing the newer kits have a different tom setup.

Enjoy those sweet looking Ludwigs.

I tried to go with the Vintage Spurs but Ludwig wouldn't put them on an 18" kick. They don't wanna put them on anything smaller than a 22". Which is crap since they put them on their 20" Fab 4 kits. I tried though.

As for the Tom Mount... It is a Gibraltar "Vintage Rail Mount". I ordered it seperately and installed it the day the kit came in. Just 2 holes in the kick. The tom sat way high so I did some kooky stuff to the mount. Cut off about 3/4" of the tube so that it sat all the way down. Reset the mount on the RIMS mount higher (thus setting the tom lower when flown). And finally grinding the l-arm down so that it was skinny all the way down to the bend. I know that all seems crazy but you can't really see any of this work and it actually lowered the tom about 2".

That sucks they wouldn't put those classic spurs on the kick, especially since they do have them on the Fab 4 kits. You did one heck of a job on that tom rail setup...it looks sweet. Even though I'm not a fan of mounting toms off bass drum (all my kicks are virgin), that gibraltar mount looks so much nicer than Ludwig's.

ironcobra...tama made starclassics with red, white, and blue silk finishes which were pretty much the same thing, you might be able to find one somewhere, they were gorgeous

Usually I hate oyster wraps, but up close that looks reaaaaaal cool. Nice Bos ride, too. Must sound amazing .. I've got a 20" Trad Med-Thin.. so exquisite.

By the way, ironcobra.. Tama's Starclassic Performer "Flashback" series has two oyster finishes: Citrus Mod and Psyche Red.
To be honest, I think the Citrus Mod looks a lot nicer..

The funny thing is that the finish was the hardest thing for me to decide on. It seems stupid since you don't "hear" the finish. I knew the sizes I wanted, I knew what hardware I wanted including that Gibraltar Rail Mount and I knew I wanted a wrap finish for that classic look. I kept going back and forth between the Black Oyster Pearl, the Black Diamond Pearl and Blue or Silver Sparkle. And, the truth is, I probably would've been happy with any of those.

Nice little kit you got there!

I was going to say something about getting that kick up off the floor with a riser plate, reading about what you had to go through to loose 2" off the rack tom height, I'll withdraw said comment.
