Default Finally...my Turk hats arrived!

Oh yeah! finally I got my Istanbul Agop Turk hats!
Here is the story:

When I showed my 21" Istanbul Mel Lewis Ride here Duncan ("Mediocrefunkybeat") talked something about getting an Istanbul Hi-Hat instead of a Sabian...or something like this.
Then I thought about selling my 14" Sabian HHX Evolution hats and getting some nice Istanbuls. It was still a dream but this dream soon became a real deal. So I sold my HHX (they were too heavy, too bright for me...just didn`t fit in my style anymore).
And then I purchased those Istanbul Agop 14" Turk hats at www.cymbalsonly.com
I had to wait long time because the German police had to make sure that there aren`t drugs or weapons in the package.

However, today I finally received them. The weight is 928g for the top, 964g for the bottom. So they are pretty thin and light...my first impression was: WOOOW. Really.
They sound very dark, musical, very unique...kinda trashy. But still very controlled and typical for Instanbul Agops: Stiffer than Bosphorus.
I just love them! =)

sound clips are up, too!

1. Chick-Stick
http://media.putfile.com/Chick-Stick-Closed-and-Open

2. A groove, kinda funky
http://media.putfile.com/Groove-59

3. Swing played on Hi-Hat
http://media.putfile.com/Hi-Hat-Jazz

4. Jazz performance sample with contra bass
http://media.putfile.com/Performance-with-contra-bass

Here are some pics (btw, they look sooo beautiful!):

comments are really appreciated!

Karl

beeeeeeeauty man! aah, i already hear this dark, earthy tone! i had a chance to play Bosphorus Turks (which probably sound similar), while being in their factory, and they sounded just great. congrats Karl, it's a small step for you, but a big leap for jazz drumming community! ;)

That is one nice bunch a cymbals you got there (for some reason I prefer the Istanbul Mehmet Mel than the Agop, but both are great cymbals)

Wow, so many great comments... =)
thanks so much! haha, the funny thing in the Istanbul catalog is that they are said to be good for Trance, Metal etc. as well
Well, but those light things? lol...They are amazing amazing amazing for Jazz of course, still cool for Funk kind of stuff, okay for some classic rock.
But overall they feel light, natural, raw...for me the perfect Jazz hats.

Mhhh...I have no money at the moment. lol
If I earn enough for the future I would buy a Flattie, an Istanbul Agop Turk Flat Ride 19" as a the third ride, replace it with my 12" splash. But that is so far away, such a big dream haha.

Most important is still to improve my playing and my skills, those cymbals just sound good if you can play em. ;-)
But yeah, a Turk flat would be awesome...but anyway, a dream!

here would be a pic of that "dream" set-up (not exactly the same):

thanks alot,

Karl

...Or the Sonor equivalent of that kit ;-).

Really nice hats. I'm so tempted to get a pair for myself and have two sets of cymbals, you really can never have too many cymbals. After I go on holiday and get my audio interface, I can see some interesting things happening to my setup. Those are lovely hats Karl, I'm glad you like them.

Congratulations, Karl! A dream comes true, doesn't it?...

Those hats look stunning. I'm a big fan of Istanbuls, so I feel glad for you.

BTW, when you close the hat, are they perfectly flat, or are there small gaps between the cymbals at some places (I have this in my Alchemys)?

Yes, a short time I was thinking about getting some sigs but you know, the sound isn`t what I really wanted to have. The sigs sound so unique but it doesn`t fit so right...
The sig Rides are nice, I love the light 22" model (2000-2100 grams)...would you like to get a light model or a heavy?

I can say: YES. A dream definitly comes true, I`m so happy with them!
mhhh, I actually can`t see any gaps, usually (as described in the catalog) they control every cymbal...but even if there were gaps it wouldn`t be that bad.

thanks, oh and btw...sound sample are coming!

Mhhh, good question. I don`t know the exact chemical reaction when it comes to melting metal etc. but yeah, I`ll try to get more info about that. To tell you roughly it is the reaction when the bronze plate comes from the oven and when it gets hammered. I guess it`s pressure and temperature...but I am not sure about the exact reasons.

Whoo i didn't think they sounded that great! You should send the recordings into Tony, or at least tell him how you did them, mics used, position etc. Your recordings are much better! This is very close to the sound i want, maybe i could get these as a 2nd pair.

haha...well, I sold my old hats to get these. I think that selling and buying is a good thing. hehe, and it`s legal. ;-D
In the beginning this circle of selling and buying seemed unbelievable to me, I thought my parents (especially my father) would say no but actually it was all relaxed!

Yeah, yesterday I chatted with him and I`ve also shown him the sounds I`ve made. He liked them from what I`ve read. They are made not very detailed, I mean I´ve not positioned thousands of mics around it. Just one overhead positioned over the whole kit (in the AB position with the other)...and it sounded surprisingly authentic.

Haha, so you see?
As I told Latin Groover over PM, Tony`s sound clips on cymbalsonly.com are actually the most authentic. I wish you all could hear them live...if you say that they sound good on my sounds how good must they sound live? ;-)

later,

Karl

Nah we all like your recordings better Karl. I think that yours are more authentic as well, because i think Tony positions the mic under the cymbal (espicially on the rides). It comes out with alot of the overtones where as in a live situation you don't hear them as pronounced, although i'm no micing expert.

Really? Mhhh...cool. Anyway I`m sorry that I`ve got a hall effect in the samples.
So my mic position is very standard, nothing special but I don`t know how Tonyis micing the cymbals, he wrote that he takes care of every detail.
However, glad you like the sounds, a few minutes ago I tried the song for the radio the first time...man, it feels so amazing with the hats! =)

I own MB20's.. despite what the meinl site says... these do not sound anything at all similar. Even the meinl sound clip is far too bright and heavy.

In fact... these are almost exactly opposite...

turks: dark, dry, light weight
mb20: bright, and thick

I should record some tunes on saturday with my MB20's to demonstrate this, if i get time. I think the turks would be much more responsive than the extremely heavy Meinls.

And Karl... they sound AWESOME... i think you've chosen my next set of cymbals of me!
