Default Is having moongels on Remo Emperors same as Remo Pinstripes

I'm getting Remo Emperors soon, and I don't want it to ring to much so i'm probably gonna get moongels. If I have moongels on the Emperors, will it sound the same as Pinstripes?

Then tune them accordingly

I have never encountered the time in which any amount of dampening was necessary on toms.

But to answer your question, they'll sound dead. So yes, they'll sound like pinstripes.

I have to agree. Learn to tune them and tune the ring out if necessary. I don't dampen toms at all either and I use clear Emperors over clear Ambassador's.

I can't imagine a Moongel on an Emperor head but to each his/her own. Listen to your drums in a mix or have someone play them and listen out front. You may change your view of using 2 ply heads dampened with anything.

Lastly, I would imagine that an Emperor with a full Moongel on it may actually be more dampened than what a similarly tuned Pinstripe without anything else to dampen may offer but they can be similar.

I agree a Moongel on an Emperor is probably going to sound more muffled than a Pinstripe.

What I don't get is why choose a head you (may) not like right out of the box, or why worry about changing something about a head you haven't even tried out yet.

If you want Emperors, get them, tune them well, and love them for the sound the have.

Or...

Get something else, tune them well, and love those for the sound they have.
