Default DIY drum platform?

Anyone ever built a drum platform?

I'm thinking of making one for my church as a gift before I leave.
Any ideas?

Find 4 or 8 (depending on how high you want it) standard industrial palletes. Bolt them together in some fashion, cover in plywood or MDF sheeting and staple carpet over it, shouldnt be too hard, or too expensive, you could use a lot of second hand goods for it.

+1
I helped a guy do it for his set.
4 pallets did him good, he used MDF and outdoor carpet (from Home Depot) to cover each one with slight overlap (1 inch or so)towards all the ends that met up.
Heres the funny part, he took a commerical tiedown strap with a come-a-long(ratchet fastner) to hold them all together around all four (the side edges). Seemed to work for him fine.

How heavy would the entire thing be if I used let's say 6 palettes?

cos the thing has to be relatively easy to move away. The stage sometimes needs to be used for other stuff and the drums need to be moved, so...

Pallets vary a lot in weight, you can either choose older, more seasoned woods which are lighter, or newer, possibly more sturdy new pallets. If you are worried about the weight, make each one individual, they should weigh more thanabout 15-20kilos each.

As someone who works with pallets everyday, they can be very heavy. If you put 6 or 8 together you might want to have a forklift handy. They will not be easy to move. If you use the search function, Drummermom had very good plans on the one she built for her church group that would fold up and be moved or put away easily. Check her out.

Thanks very much Gruntersdad... I did a search and those threads were really helpful. I wasn't really looking for a portable one, just one that would move away easily. I've got a rough idea what I plan to do. Thanks alot.

After reading many of the hints in this site, I made a neat drum platform for my church. I was posting a reply to another thread about it... here's the same content in case you want to see.

I made it circular so it could be rolled on and off the stage area, and I made the max diameter 1/2" less than the height of the doorway to the stage. After carpeting it, it just fits through the doors. It fits a 10-panel drum shield perfectly, and the drummers like it.

I figured out how to post some pictures of it and the plans I drew up. Look in my albums on this site at http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/a...hp?albumid=502

So far, it seems to be working out great!

Have you checked with your church to see if they even want a drum riser? I know with the way our band and platform is setup at our church a riser isn't an option.
