Default Multi-Purpose Cymbal..

Yoho,

Basically, For gigging, waiting for the Portnoy guy with a large number of cymbals can be annoying and time-consuming.

I'm not that guy, normally I rock 14" or 15" Hats, 2 x 18" Crashes, 20" Ride & 20" China.

It's quite common for me to have to scrap the china due to stage size constraints. No biggie though, just my sound loses a bit of colour. Anyway, I was thinking, inspired by Paiste Giant Beat Multi's..What are your suggestions for a Crash/fx/China cymbal? I'd be looking at one that on first sound, seems to be a crash, but when singled out on an accent or something, is conceivable as a fx/china cymbal.

I was thinking 18" O-zone crash (AAX or HHX), but my only concern was (after seeing a GoateeDrumKing guy's video) that they have a habit of breaking. Don't get me wrong, I've never broken a cymbal through playing in my life. But still, I'd hate to shell out that money and find i've broken it so quickly.

Anyone have any other suggestions or Advice?

Cheers,
TC

Sabian HHXtreme Crash 19".

A very nice, trashy crash.

Had a listen, probably a little too dry for me. Anyone got any soundclips of the AAX O-Zones?

Well you can try a Zildjian Oriental Crash of Doom, or a Zildjian Trashformer, or a ZHT EFX crash. You can also try the great Istanbul Agop Trash Hit (http://www.cymbalsonly.com/cymbals/agop/agop.htm).

Most of Stagg crashes sound like chinas, so you can get a cheap SH or DH Exotic crash.

Those trash hits sound so good.

To be honest, it might be easier when cutting down to maybe a get a 20" Giant Beat Multi (to act as a low-pitch crash), then just use a regular china and another brighter crash. I think i may be asking for something that doesn't exist.

Bosphorus Trash Crash or Pang Thang. But the Crash of Doom is definitely another good option if you're sticking to Zildjian. I've played one with rivets in it, and it sounded CRAAAZY. Rivets may not be what you're looking for, though.

What about Jo Jo Mayer's Fierce Crashes? They are a nice combo of crash 'n' trash!

I'd say the O-zone crashes are just over the fence in Chinaland, not quite on the fence between Chinaland and crashland (which is what I think you're looking for!)...

That's pure cheese...and I'm embarassed to have written it!!!

I own a "crash of doom" and I just love it I can use it as a China or a Crash and it even has a cool light ride sound to it as well all i use on my kit is a 21"ride,14"hi-hats,17"crash,10"splash and the "crash of doom" that's all I need because I hate lugging hardware LOL.

Keep Swatting,
Bonzolead

Sabian's O Zone--both Evolution and Legacy are popular
A Custom EFX--similar function
Bosphorus Stanton Moore Pang and trash crash are quite nice as well.
I'm not a fan of the trashy sound but there are so many options these days.

OH I forgot to mention...SABIAN AA Rocktagon-quite popular even in jazz crowds. Interesting sound, plus its an octagonal cymbal...gotta have one of those :)

i was trying to suggest this yesterday, but my internet cut out.

i think that both sound excellent with a 20" giant beat (it's my eventual plan to buy one or the other to compliment my own)
