Default It's sad, but I had to ask.

Last night I was playing a gig, and mid guitar change our electronics/keyboard player started playing beats on midi drums for a laugh. He then played a blast beat to the best of his ability and then turned to me with a sort of "are you thinking what I'm thinking" look on his face. So I played a blast beat much faster and we laughed. This went on with rolls and grooves and stuff, then in the end, he programmed in a 16th note blast and set it to loop at 300bpm!

We all laughed and I accepted defeat, but what I'm asking is, do you think it was fair seeing as he wasn't actually playing the beats?

If enough of you agree that I won, I think I should get to beat him up so please support the cause.

Thank you.

Tutin

SHUT UP! IT'S NOT SAD! : )

I dont really get the point of this but i guess you sorta win automaticaly seeing how it was a drum battle and you were the only one actually playing the drums

that would have been a lot of fun to watch! given that he wasn't actually playing them, and that it doesn't take talent to program blast beats, and given that no actual drummer can physically play that fast, you win! not an entire victory, but I would say he manipulated technology- now if he was moving his fingers on a keyboard midi that fast, then he wins, but if he tells a computer what to do, you win. The real clincher though is that he "won" on blast beats, which are automatically trumped by any sort of decent, relativaley fast grooves!

So all this went on during a gig?

In all honesty though, who cares if a keyboardist played keyboard blast beats faster than you...*moan*

Ohh god, I can't believe I'm actually replying to this thread.

I agree, he just presses random keys well, big deal, maybe he can score a cool office gig with those mad keyboard skills!

He is a good keyboard player, you are a drummer, its apples and oranges, don't sweat it.

Isn't the point to this that they had fun? Does it really matter if it was a machine or some high ranking pro?

The way I see it, you accepted the challenge at the time, lost and are looking for an excuse to change the result to a victory. Sorry, accept the defeat, but that doesn't mean you still can't beat the crap out of him anyway. ;-)

I think it would have been fun to watch as well.

The keyboard player needs to be reminded that his left hand is there to replace the bass player, not the drummer. ;^ )

You should've started play a super funky beat with a lot of feeling that's one thing you can't. get out of keyboard drums or a drum machines is FEELING or GROOVE.who cares how fast it is you will just confuse your average listener.faster doesn't. mean better.

A machine beat verses a person playing? The person wins not the machine! A machine has no skill base just doing what a programer programed it to do! PS work on your double, triple, and quadruple stroke rolls and if you get good enough you will beat the machine! Using a bass drum or double bass with the compound stroke rolls!

Don`t even use the word "win"...or "lose". It`s no fight!

You play a beat...add your flavour, feel...dynamics and all that. He programmed it. And everything is missing what you add.
Now why do you even feel strange or desperate??????

My father has recently shown me a few drum programs. Surely they sound okay when creating a MIDI...but other than that...no comment. ;-)

Don`t worry, there isn`t a reason.

Karl

...Since when does a drummer let alone a Scottsman have to ask for permission to beat up a keyboard player?

What the hell is a "Blast Beat" anyway. This 52 year old can't keep up with this lingo.

Haha, it'll just turn into a man vs machine rant.

Onemat, a blast beat is alternating 16ths between bass drum/hi hat and snare. Used in death metal a lot.

And Baz, you have a good point. I wasn't asking permission, just everyone's view on the matter haha.

You don't need a reason to beat up your keyboard player, but just the fact that he played MIDI drum beats at a gig gives MORE than enough reason! Rip the drum buttons off his keyboard!

I've played "drums" on a keyboard, and I can get a feeling or groove that other musicians respond to. I'm not talking about programming, but playing live through a keyboard and amp. It's not the same as playing a kit, but it's actually kind of fun. My fingers are pretty well trained from playing small acoustic percussion and I can get some fast stuff going on that's tight.

Programming beats, however, is cheating. The drummer wins, at whatever speed.

hmm, have to disagree. From what I know the original blast beat would have been 16th notes with you hands and one of your feet doing half time lining up with either you right or left hand. Of course the subdivision wouldn't be important, you could do 32nd notes with your hands and 16ths with you foot.

Now modern blast beats can include using both feet keeping up with your hands. You could also remove notes from the roll your hands are doing so it isn't a solid roll.... Move it around the kit and enjoy.

PS, I'm no expert and I know a lot of people frown on blast beats... but hey, they are fun to practice:)

Yes, but this is the particular type of blast beat I was playing and is know to be the most basic. In tab:

HH- o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-
SN- -o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o
BD- o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

There are loads of types of blast beats, cannibal blasts, gravity blasts, Euro blasts, two footed, one footed, hyper blasts... the list is endless. Derek Roddy uses blast beats really interestingly in "The victorious reign" by Hate Eternal, somewhere in the bridge. The guy is definitely the one to tell you about blast beats.
