i would just get creative if i were you, ya know, just experiment all around the kit using say paradiddles (or whatever rudiment) and see what you can come up with. some of my favorite grooves came as a result of just experimenting around.

but books and videos are always helpful as well. not sure of any really.

Quick question for you Mr. Petrillo...I watched a clip of a solo from your new book and it seems pretty heavy(maybe it's all like this or maybe you slow it down). So, what level of drummer to you recommend the book for? It definately seems like a worth while investment, but not if I'm not going to be able to follow.
PS I've been playing for just under a year and a half, so still got some learning to do.

Say, BD..

I think the material is good for intermediate players on up, so I think you will benefit from it. The fills are played SLOWLY on the DVD, plus, the 50 groove play alongs are alot of fun, and the hand exercises and Rudiment TAB system will help you memorize the rudiments, so it's something you will use for a long time..

Perhaps you can go over to my thread under DRUMMMERS and ask the same question, because I think many people probably are curious as well! That would be great! I'll repond there also!

Anyway, let me know what you think, and keep it up!

PS..Call me Pat, dude!

All the Best

Haha, yeah I'll definately go post on the other section, you helped me, it'd only be fair. And as far as the whole "Mr." thing, you know what they say, respect your elders, so didn't wanna start off on the wrong step with you and offend you in some way; I also have a lot of respect for you so it seemed like the right thing to say.

I believe the best vehicle for a fill is your own imagination coupled with knowledge of drumming rudiments and exercises to build motor skills needed by your muscles. I also think that are no all purpose fills and that each piece of music should be treated according to its own merrits and what it is saying. Learning a fill used in one song may work in another, but the personal expression aspect devoted to that piece is missing.

My favorite books devoted to drum technique are the Master Studies books, Stick contol, both accented and non accented and the Alan Dawson book.

I feel these must only be used as guides however and never in place of personal expression.

Good point, Wy

The best fill brings the music to point A to point B seamlessly. And many times its as easy as an 8th note build up on the toms! While I agree there aren't many 'all purpose" fills, there are templates one can learn as springboards to creativity. Thats what I try to teach in the DVD.

Good luck!
