Default Nat Townsley sound

How do you get your toms to sound so fat with single coated heads? Do you tune top high and bottom low or vice versa?

Tune the heads a perfect fourth apart, the batter head lower than the resonant head. Mind you, though, that when you close-mike a drum, you'll hear the phenomenon called the proximity effect -- that is, when you place a mic within two inches of the sound source you'll get a natural low end boost. The tuning isn't the only contributing factor to Nat's sound on that video.
