How do you get your toms to sound so fat with single coated heads? Do you tune top high and bottom low or vice versa? |

Tune the heads a perfect fourth apart, the batter head lower than the resonant head. Mind you, though, that when you close-mike a drum, you'll hear the phenomenon called the proximity effect -- that is, when you place a mic within two inches of the sound source you'll get a natural low end boost. The tuning isn't the only contributing factor to Nat's sound on that video.
