I have an entry level kit that sounds good with the stock heads but i want to put the best heads i can find to make i tsound even better. about the brand i can't tell l what brand it is since is a new brand, and i dont want everybody to tell me that new brands suk, although that sounds really nice for an entry level kit. Is comparable with the Pearl export sound.

I have a begginer kit - I just replaced all the batter heads with Emperors (clear). Good heads, but I find they sound highly resonant - I think I have them tuned to high, but everytime I try to figure out what to tune them to, I get "personal preference", so who knows! I put an Ambassodor coated on my snare, and that sounds great.

Remo heads hold up really good. I would go for Emperor or Ambassador heads from Remo. I haven't really tried Evans heads except for the one bass drum head that i got from them that only lasted me a couple months.

One of my friends thats been playing for awhile swears by Evans Hydraulics. He likes them cuz they last forever. He ahs a pretty good sound going, not sure what he uses for resonant heads though...

for an entry level kit, you'll probably want muffled heads. hydraulics are a pretty good suggestion, or something less drastic (ex EC2s or pinstripes) depending on the kit's sound. i wouldn't suggest hydraulics for a higher end kit, too dead. hope it works out

by the way, all the heads i mentioned are going to be pretty durable as they're all 2 ply

I have clear EC2s on my Sonor Force 2005 and it took me some days to get used to the sound or the heads needed some days to develop their sound, anyway I like how they sound now, really deep and full and since they're 2ply I don't worry about the durability.
Alternatives would be the Remo Pinstripe (pretty equal to EC2s) or the Evans Hydraulic (even more muffled) heads.
For the bassdrum I use an EVANS EMAD and it rocks. With the big mufflering it has the deepest bassdrumsound I ever heard. If you want to go with Remo, I heard better things about the Powerstroke for bassdrums than pinstripes and another head I heard many good opinions of is the Aquarian Superkick 2.

Go for Pinstripes... Musician's Friend sells a "blem" set for a great deal. Look under the "scratch and dent" section.

yeah i would think pinstripes would be the way to go....thats how i started off...reskinning my PP kit with Pinstripes back in the day when i didnt have a clue how to tune!

now i go for Remo Coated Ambassadors...

but if you want a sound like how you describe i think pinstripes are a good bet, also quite easy to tune....

Remo;

Pinstripes on batter sides on toms, Ambassador Clear resonants on toms,

Powerstroke 3's on Kick and Snare batter sides, Emperor Hazy on Snare resonant side.

I wouldn't put hydraulics on any kit, beginner or not, unless you want an extremely dead, cardboardy sound.

For entry level kits most recommend pinstripes; I would add the Evans EC2 to the list. The EC2s will sustain a bit more, if that's what you like.

Best thing to do is get one of each for one tom, say the 12", and try them yourself.

smooth white emperors on the toms batters. emperors or ambassadors clear on the toms reso. for a tama superstar custom hyperdrive these make for brightness and punch. which i like. and live it doesn't get any better. for me at least. it's all personal preference.
evans eq3 clear on the bass drum batter. remo powerstroke 3 (ported) on the bass drum reso. it's bright and punchy with a fair amount of low end.
remo coated ambassador on the snare batter. remo ambassador hazy on the snare reso.

nothing in or on the drums at all. period.

I would go with evans ec2 coated or clear. Well, it depends on you, but personally i prefer the coated ones because it has a warmer tone, I think the clear ones produce a punchier and brighter tone. I just love these heads.. But I have no experince of using them on small toms. I bought them yesterday for my 13" tom, and it sounded wonderful. I'm going to put them on my 12" and 16" tom.

Cheers

Before anyone changes a head set-up, you need to ask some questions. first, If you are dissatisfied, try to describe out loud to yourself what it is that you do not like, or want to change. Next, is there anything about what I have that can be changed to make it better. don't change for the sake of change, with no idea what you want to achieve. Gets awfully expensive! change with a purpose. Is your problem durability? consider a thicker head. Want more sensitivity? Try a thinner head. too much ring? Try heads with sound control, or try external muffling. Consider trying different head tensions before changing heads. I think it best to start "in the middle" before changing, so you have a better idea in which to move. For example, a "standard" set up with coated ambassadors on top and correlating weight clear on the bottom is a good place to start. Also, when listening to your drums, have someone else play something on it and listen to it about 10' away, then 20' or 30' away. You will be amazed at how different it sounds. this is the audience perspective.

Get whatever two-ply head you want; several have already been mentioned. For the tom bottoms buy Evans EC Resonant heads. They will help the drums have a nice low resonance. I use them on my Gretsch Catalina toms, which have very good sustain. They are also on the Mapex Saturn toms I play at church. They sound good with one-ply or two-ply batter heads. I have been playing drumset since 1970, and I will never use anything else on the tom bottoms. Peace and goodwill.

cybernetic, i have a pack of 10 12 14 and 16 remo pinstripes. ive had them only for only three days, but i dont really like them like them.

i think i want to get some single ply heads for my drums.

would you be interested in buying them from me over ebay?

i paid $50 plus tax, i can sell them to you for $40 bucks. this would help us both out, especially if youre looking for the pinstripe/ec2 type head. they fit the drums correctly
