Default OH NO! Not another splash cymbal thread!

10" splashes to be precise!, Fast, but dark and sort of trashy (without being gongy though, tried a Z. Oriental Trash Splash - hated it)

Current Cymbal situation (all Zildjian unless specified otherwise) is
1. 14" Sab. HH hats (soon to become crazy hybrid 14" K Custom Dark Crash as top, HH hat top as bottom)
2. 10" Sabian B8 Splash (this is what I'm looking to replace)
the 14" that's going to become a hi-hat is about to be replaced with a 12" Wuhan Splash
3. 18" Sabian AA Regular Crash
4. 17" K Custom Dark Crash
5. 20" K Custom Medium Ride
6. 22" Istanbul Agop Signature Ride (VERY thin - 2108g)

The project is Funky (and I'm trying to make it funkier) Blues Rock. Thinking HH, HHX, K or K Custom. Had been planning on maybe going Turkish, but with a gig coming up next Friday, and our last real practice tomorrow wanted to get something that I could get my hands on quickly, AND try out in person. My general slant lately has been more towards the Jazz Style setup that guys like Steve Jordan and Stanton Moore play funk so well on, that is 3 or 4 big cymbals that are crashable and rideable, but I do like having another option or two for some quick hits (specifically for the song I'll link below - be kind, it's a practice recording, and we practice for a reason!). I'm actually gonna replace my 14" crash with a 12" Wuhan, because the 14" K Custom dark didn't really fit "either side" of the equation there (but it makes an INCREDIBLY funky hi-hat top!). I used to have a 12" A custom, but it cracked, and I have been making do with a 10" Sabian B8. I have fallen in love with the speed of the smaller splash, but the sound is AWFUL. So I'm really looking for a 10" that fits into the overall vibe. The one particular song that it really goes in is this one on the postchorus(as you can hear the B8 was choking on me, and I eventually ended up experimenting with the 14" and even 18" crashes) :

the K custom dark is exactly what you described.

Even the regular K is close, and the straight up zildjian, no-series 10" splash is still sort of dark and a little trashy. That's the one I have.

Cool, I'll be going by justdrums here in Richmond, which is a drums and percussion only store that just opened here in Richmond and owned by a guy from this board (check out the two "about the passion" threads on the off topic forum)

I'll definitely be first on the lookout for the 10"K Custom, but can anyone "describe" the HHX duo and evolution? It intrigues me, and I'm pretty sure he carrys at least the duo in stock. Obviously I'll be checking out everything before I buy, but I can't check out every cymbal in the place, and I want a "plan" of which cymbals in particular I want to make sure to remember. Thanks again y'all.

i second the 10" k custom splash... i use a 10" k splash (brilliant finish) and love it.. at the moment i am looking for another splash to compliment it, so any ideas on that would be cool aswell.

Any "Descriptive" input on the Sabians?

If not, just all the more excuse to try more stuff out, I suppose.

I've heard good things about the new Meinl's, but that's where this part comes in:

Actually practice is tomorrow from today, not yesterday. The Mein's might as well be Turkish, other than a few of their really basic cheap things I've never seen Meinl in a store.

Hello,

i see all of your cymbals are first class. Stagg is not really first class but they sell vintage Bronze and other really dark splashes.
But i think they wouldn't be great in your setup.

Zidljian K would be perfect!

Maybe a HHX legacy splash that whole line is pretty dark. As for other sabians the evolution isn't that dark. I would just get the K custom dark splash.

The Evolution is pretty damn trashy and some that I've tried have been pretty dark sounding too. No cymbal with sound alike, even if they are of the same line.

Went to justdrums and tried the HHX, and the K Custom Dark.

The K Custom was perfect. I found the HHX a tad clangy, although that might get cut out in a band, the K was thinner and just what I wanted though. So I picked it up in the 10" size.

It will see practice tomorrow along with the Wuhan 12" (BTW, on thickness, profile and lathing, the Wuhan "looks" alot like the K) . I'm also gonna try out my crazy hybrid hi-hat idea, which will definitely have the right sonority, but maybe a little too subtle and quiet. We'll see.

Thanks for the help, y'all!

HHX (evolution or legacy) has my vote.

Actually I have the 12" Wuhan on my set, if they carried the 10" in any stores around here I'd consider it as well, but I went through a pile of 10 cymbals to pick out my 12" I wouldn't want to go through mail order/return/mail order/return 5 times to get the 10"! Plus the Wuhan sound is very cool, but it definitely has a touch of "chinese" in it, so I only really want one of the on my set.

Made more sense financially to go Wuhan for the 12" and something pricier for the 10" anyway. I'm really happy with the 10" K Custom Dark, after Last nights practice, and am just as happy with the hybrid Zildjian Sabian crash/hats that I used.
