It took about 4 hrs......measured 50 times before drilling..LOL
All parts from drumfoundry......$100 roughly for the parts...I am thinking Tangerine glass glitter The edges are flawless....seriously.... more people should build there own kits....for 1/3 of the price I will have a kit that sounds every bit as good as any pro level kit on the market....and you have the pride in knowing that YOU chose the lugs, placement of the lugs, stain or wrap...and the drilling(which is the hardest part) |

Hey nice job, Larlev!
Man tangerine spakle sounds awesome, if there was any way to do it in a laquer finish that would be sweet! i'm not into wraps, ecspecailly on a hi-end hand made kit like that! he-he, no seriously nice job, lugs look awsome! what about a nice natural maple look!

I am trying to make this as easy as possible......finishing can be quite time consuming...although I guess since I am home for the next 4 weeks, I might as well try it.. I might just use a tung oil finish.....looks good on other kits that I have seen |

thats cool, im gonna start by putting together 4 8"Electronic pads out of cheap wood, because they will be using mesh heads and they will only be 3 inches deep..
Its a good idea for a first project. cool looking tom man, looking forward to the rest of the kit. |

hey Larlev, maybe look into what it would cost to have a custom sparkle paint job, once your whole kit is complete, maybe like a nieghborhood hotrod shop could do it for you.

Looks very good, mang. Are you afraid those giant lugs are going to effect the shells ability to vibrate???

Is it possible to leave a drum "unfinished" and just oil it with Tung oil or something along those lines? I've got a matte finish yamaha set that I think looks gorgeous "classy" as opposed to "glitzy" and I think it would be cool to take that a step further. Any reasons, acoustic or practical that one wouldn't want to do that?

It usually takes 10-15 coats..with wet-sanding in between....then a final buff.... The tung oil is also a very forgiving finish for a first time DIY project.... |

Cool. That may be something to try the next time I've got some time and some money on my hands (not as much as a "new drum" though).
I've seen alot of custom guitars with that kind of Finish (and even more basses) and think they're great. That little drum you've made looks killer, especially with the diecast hoops. |

thanks bro.....I spent countless hours researching all the different aspects of what I could and couldn't do with this build..... The only thing different with tung oil and drum shells is the plys....guitars are solid wood...this is why the 10-15 coats and sanding is required...the drum shells soak up the oil like crazy.... |

Very professional looking. I'm impressed. This is a real inspiration.

HAHAAA! fantastic.
My kit is just like this, homemade Keller maple, big, round lugs just like those. I was also thinking of getting tangerene glitter (i've got a red stain on there now) Give a tutorial for the wraps, eh? |
