Default Derrick's new tune, just mp3

Hey all, had some downtime lately so I've been working on some music. Came up with this one a few days ago, its a work in progress. I want it to be a 20 minute long drumming epic.

If you are not a fan of self indulgent overplayed prog, you might not like this, but the drums are fun I think.

Here's the tune. Mudbone.

It's called Mudbone cause I watched a richard pryor routine on tv just before composing. I was thinking about putting pryor mudbone soundclips over the drum solo sections. That might be interesting.

Critiqies, criticisms, comments are all welcome.

Derrick

Haha, absolutely AWESOME man. Extremely overindulgent, but quite fun. It's good to hear you really stretch out a bit.

Hate the "Zelda" sounding MIDI, but the tune is cool, and the drumming is great! Very tight!

Yeah the MIDI can be a pain on the ears sometimes, but I do the best I can to minimize the "nintendo" effect. MIDI might not ever come close to real instrumentation, but I don't have the patience for sampling all these crazy drum parts for a more realistic sound. I do use soundfonts occasionally to mix the two, but I'm lazy and didn't feel like it for this one. Ha. Maybe later.

Thanks for the compliments bro! You da man logo.

Just for the record, the MIDI comment was in no way a knock against you by any means.....as I said, great playing, and cool tune!

No offense was taken at all. I was just agreeing with you on the downsides of MIDI. You rock.

Great tune- overindulgent, yes, but thats what makes it a drummers tune. Looking foward to that epic drum song, I can almost hear it already from this song. Great drumming too (serious envy of your skills right here...)! MIDI can be a pain though, i spent hours and hours toying with my v-drums, but now they finally sound almost exactly acoustic, but I've never had the same luck with guitar or bass parts no matter how much editing I put into them. At least your MIDI sounds good though, and the music is amazing!!! Keep it up!

duuuude, you really make the greatest music :-). I, unlike others, really love the midi-sounds.

Listen to this: http://www.myspace.com/findelmusic

they make music with those samples too, and it really kicks a**.

But, to the drumming: you really really sound like a drumcomputer, so tight. You are very creative too. Keep up the great work.

Btw, with what program do you make those midi soundtracks, and with what do you put it all together?

I use guitar pro for all the non-drum parts, including some percussion that I can't do on the kit (such as the shaker in the intro). I'm not a guitarist and Guitar Pro is the only tab / modern midi sequencing program I've ever really toyed with. Most of the other ones seemed to much of a pain to learn. So I stuck with GP, and got somewhat crafty at using it.

Then I run the MIDI through Cakewalk Sonar with soundfonts. Then comes the click and then I play along on the V's, all recorded through cakewalk as well. For mixing I use Cool Edit Pro. Adobe bought it and now its Audition, but I don't like some of the changes they made so I still use good ol' Cool Edit.

Thanks everyone for the massive compliments! I'm glad you all really liked it. That's the BEST inspiration to make more music!

Derrick

PS - and yes I will be a man here and admit, the kick drum solo is MIDI. I did not do that. Couldn't is the more appropriate word. I wanted it in there cause I liked how it fit in that part of the tune but my legs just wouldnt do the flam taps I wanted them to do. Oh well. Everything else is real though. Think of it as a "wire" move in a kung fu movie. Just a little enhancement on the real thing.

Great playing, as always, Derrick! It's not really my style of music, but I can certainly enjoy and appreciate the drums.

I have to say, I'm glad you admitted to the kick solo part was midi! My jaw dropped when I heard that bit - I was thinking "How in the world did he do THAT?" I was ready to throw away my double pedal for good...

Man, come to think of it, I still probably ought to throw it out!

Have fun with the rest of that epic!
