Default Crash Cymbal Advice

Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new crash so I thought I'd ask some opinions here and get some info.

I'm replacing my cracked 18" A custom projection crash, which has been going down hill since the end of last year. I have 4 crashes on my kit: 16" + 18" A Customs, an 18" 2002 full crash and lastly the projection. I want something a bit darker than my other cymbals, but I still want it to be able to cut through

At the moment I'm considering either a 19" K Custom Hybrid or a 19" New Sig. dark energy, but I want a few more options before making up my mind.

Thanks.

Maybe you should look in Sabians HHX line? Like 19" stage or power crash?

After just coming out of a practice session, I can give nothing but praise and recomendations about my Bosphorus traditional series 16" medium crash. It's a bit higher pitched because of it's medium thickness, but is still dark in tonality. Maybe an 18" would suit you? If it doesn't quite have the cut you need, the Gold series is the brilliant finish version of the traditionals (mainly in the heavier thicknesses). Try them. They tend to be a fair bit cheaper than the big three and meinl. Also check out Istanbul.

the sabian aax dark crashes are super. Definetly the next big crash I'll be getting.

They have the bright finish to cut through... but have nice and dark overtones.

I've heard good things about Bosphorus, I'll have a look on cybmalsonly and see what I can find. I wonder how much shipping to Australia will be. hehe.

I'll also keep a look out for those HHXs and AAXs.

Thanks for the opinions guys, keep em coming.

sabian hhx are pretty dark. and they have the tone projection on them so they should still cut.

the paragon are a mix of aax and hhx etc. maybe try those crashes.

Which ever cymbals you choose remember to get your crash's in the same series or the combinations will not sound right! If you want them to be different then mix it up but as a rule you want to use the same series of cymbals or the effects in multiple crash sound will be strangely different!

same as mixing natural and brilliant finish cymbals. i did it, and it was like, crap. i generally like contrast, but that was just bad.

i like the idea of putting a k custom hybrid in your setup, but i just love them anyway. the sig dark energy might not be cutting enough when you need it to be.
i'm surprised you cracked the projection crash before you cracked the other A customs.
personally i'd buy the k custom hybrid given the chance, but personally i'm also really broke.

I disagree with that completely, i have one brilliant and one trad finish from different series and they compliment each other perfectly well. Jose Pasillas agrees with me...

Jose Pasillas

A drummer with a great sense of color and dynamics in his playing, Jose surrounds himself with the brightness of AAX and the comparative darkness of HHX and Hand Hammered. “I listen to many styles of music, from the Police to Primus… pop, rock, funk… a bit of everything, and you can hear that in my cymbals. I like a set-up with a good mix of sounds… it keeps the music interesting.”

Jose's Setup

A) 13" AAX Fusion Hats
B) 14" AAX Mini Chinese------------------ Brilliant finish
C) 8" AAX Splash
D) 10" AAX Splash
E) 20" AAX Studio Crash ---------------- Brilliant finish
F) 12" HHX Evolution Splash
G) 20" HHX Studio Crash-------------------Traditional Finish
H) 21" Hand Hammered Raw-Bell Dry Ride
I) 18" HHX Chinese
J) 16" HHX Stage Crash --------------------Traditional finish

As does John Blackwell Junior..........

John Blackwell Jr's Setup

A) 12" AA Mini-Hats
B) 10" AA Mini-Hats
C) 19" HHXtreme Crash ----------------------------Traditional
D) 21" Hand Hammered Raw-Bell Dry Ride
E) 18" Hand Hammered Medium Crash ------Brilliant
F) 19" HHXtreme Crash
G) 18" Signature Jia Chinese

I bought my hats and ride from Drumtek in Melbourne for the grand total of around $600 on sale. My crash I picked up from Revolver drums in Melb for about $280 (not on sale, but a bit of a discount). Go to your local shops and see who stocks them, or at least check they're internet sites. Failing that you can probably order from Drumtek and have them shipped up (as opposed to shipping from the US).
