Default birthday gift for me

My wife bought me a pretty neat birthday present. Oh I love her so!

It was on clearance at GC for $240 (normally $350). It's 14x7 brass with nouveau lugs. It has just the right amount of ring, and great sensativity. I really dig it!

I almost got the new Tama Metalworks 14x6.5 black/brushed nickel with free case, but this is brass, and they're just steel. Sounds great, and it was below cost! Now I just gotta find more time to play.

Edit: I found it on musicians friend for $420 freakin dollars. I got a hell of a deal!!

Very nice. I've never played a brass snare.

Niether have I! I got it set up, but it's past a reasonable playing time. Don't you hate it when you get new gear and you can't play it 'till the next day?

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'll share this with her, so she can see how good she did.

I tried it in the store at first and hated it, but that's because it wasn't tuned at all. I tried my hand at a quick tune after borrowing a key from one of the salesmen, and didn't come up with anything good. I had almost given up, but then he offered to try to mess with it a bit. I gave him a go, and in a couple minutes, he had it singing and sounding great. I was sold. Going in, I had no expectations of spending more than $200. I was hoping to find something used; probably a piccolo, since they're cheap. I never thought I'd end up with such a pro-quality snare. This sure doesn't match my 9 year old exports very well. Anyway, I can't wait to test this sucker out.

I went in there thinking I liked little piccolo snares, and smaller sizes in general. Of all the ones I played (Tama Warlords aside), this one sounded the best. I never thought I'd play a 7" snare. Man I could go on and on. The important thing is that now I have so much motivation to practice, play, and sound better. I should tell my wife that's the real gift behind the snare.

Whew I'm long-winded today...

Yep, agreed...

that was a very good deal for such an awesome snare drum! In general, Yamaha makes some great great drums and snare drums!
How do you like the nouveau lugs? And is it right that brass is warmer sounding than steel?

Just a few questions..... :-)

Karl

Sometimes at night when the kids are asleep I'll sit behind my kit and pretend to play while making the noises with my mouth. Aha! It's actually really fun.

I have a Brass Black Panther on my watch list at eBay right now. It's a bit over my budget now, but I'm watching a few different models to see what they regularly sell for. I only have three snares right now and I want to keep collecting them.

7" deep snares are great. My Radio King is 7" deep, but it's maple.
