Default My Studio set-up...Mapex Orion, Black panther...

Oh yeah, that was one very tiring day...but it was such a huge fun!!

My band and me, we finally are in studio the next three days. Today was the first day...
We started at 11 o clock and recorded the drums and the bass guitar for the three songs on our Demo CD today. I was really looking forward to playing the drums and record some German Rock/Pop stuff.
I played on a Mapex Orion: 22x16" bass; 10", 12", 14" toms...and an awesome 14"x5.5 (I`m not so sure about the depth) Mapex black Panther Snare drum (Maple wood). Just put a new head on it (RMV Original coated) and tuned it...WOW, this thing sounds brilliant. Nice and open, amazing crack, a bit ringy and so sensitive! Had also a second snare drum, it was a Mapex Black Panther 10x5.5"...also here not sure about the depth.
On the toms were some muffled RMV heads which I couldn`t bash because if they are tuned right, those muffled toms/heads sound great!

Oh yeah, there was also a Chad Smith Signature Snare drum, sounds okay, but not as good as the beautiful Black Panther! ;-)

...and finally the cymbal specs:

Ufip 10" Class series splash
Anatolian 14" Ultimate hats
Zildjian 18" Avedis Medium Crash
Sabian 20" AAX Studio Ride (which sounds much better than my AAX Stage Ride)
...and my only cymbal: Sabian 16" AAX Bright Crash

PS: the kit is not mine! ...though: I could steal it. LOL

AND HERE ARE THE PICS::::

The Chad Smith Snare...

greetings,

Karl

Yes it is definitly. I mean, it is already a great experience to record at home with a big mixer and mics but that today was...wow...just cool.

Well, and I`m not sure if I made really a great job, I`ll hear the total result when the songs are finished...I played with a click and actually it was cool...but you know, my damn perfectionism! :-D I hope you find it good...mhhh...

The guy in studio who owns that baby said that it was a special edition...I hope that also the other drummers who drum in this studio know how amazing great this snare drum is...

thanks for comments and again: i hope that the songs and my band drumming will please you a bit....I don`t know why but somehow I have a strange feeling with the tunes, a bad feeling. I love em but I think I made not a very good job today :-(

mics.... looks like Audix D2 on toms. Audix D4 on kick. sm57 on snare batterside, Audix D3 under the snare. Looks like an older AKG C3000 on hihats. Shure beta series 57a, ?? maybe not sure, under ride.

Cant see overheads?

hehe, thanks alot for your help...I`ll ask him tomorrow anyway. I really don`t know much about Audix...oh, and yeah, I used two overheads and one special room mic to get the whole set sound and more atmosphere.

Looks like a fun kit karl! The snare especially looks good

And I see no resonant head on the bass drum - awesome! You can get a really fantastic kick sound from that, that's how they used to do it in the old days!

Well, actually it is a cool snare drum but the Black Panther was my choice then. The band and the drummer who was in the studio before used the Chad Smith...but when I saw the BP I decided to take this thing.

thanks!
Yes, we used no real reso head as you can see. When I first tried the kick it sounded so awful, just like a "boomrrrrr"...just awful. I just wanted to tune it a bit higher but he promised that this awful kick sound would sound awesome on the CD...and he was right.
Oh aahz: I saw a few pics with your DW bass which was also without a reso head. How did you tune your batter head?

thanks alot for the comments friends!

Well, first I wanted to make some seperate grooves on the kit for you but in the end we hadn`t the time for this...okay, but soon you can listen to our songs I guess. Yesterday I was sent an unmixed version of one new song we recorded...sounds cool, I`ll give you the mixed tunes then.

Wow, awsome and that main bp snare finish is killer, I think its time to whip out the duster, those toms look only slightly short of being caked in dust.

If it was my stuff, I`d have cleaned it. lol, but the problem with the sound engineer, guitarist and drummer is that he smokes most of the day and overall he is really not a man who cares about the look...actually I`m pretty sad that I can`t own these babies, even if I have money...he loves them, too and he would never sell these.

but thanks alot for your compliment mate!

Oh yes, I`m sorry...but well, I asked him and he just told me the specs but he was too fast, I understood just a bit of his language :-D

er, on toms you were right, Audix D2, I think D4 on the kick. A Shure mic on the Snare batter side, I don`t know the reso mic, I think also an Audix...

the rest I have to ask for again when I meet him next time.

PS: There are overheads but I don`t know the specs for em.

thanks anyway for reminding me!

no resonant head... looks so weird, but anyone that's been in the studio has probably had this same experience.

you walk in the door after spending all night tuning your drums to get them ready for the studio, then when you get there the engineer is like "okay, i'm gonna need you to take off the kick reso, and retune all your toms." You look at him thinking all sorts of bad things and try to explain that you spent hours tuning them last night, and then tell him that the drums will sound terrible on the recording if you do what he says. Eventually you do it anyway and then you get that first audio glimpse of your drums through the monitors in the control room. That's when you realize that this is your first time in the studio and this guy telling you to modify your drumset probably knows what he's talking about.

haha... i remember arguing for like 45 minutes with the guy at the first studio i recorded at. I quit arguing with him when he reminded me he was getting 100 bucks an hour whether we were playing music or not. whoops.

You should show that pic of the orion to the studio guys, then maybe you could buy the silver one from them. If I had that black panther snare in that finish and found a matching mapex kit, i think i'd be all about it.

Default Re: My Studio set-up...Mapex Orion, Black panther...

thanks alot guys!! =)
Well, I decided to take the Mapex for studio recording because I trust our sound man very much. He has so much experience with all th things and his drums. And what sounds horrible live can sound so awesome on the CD (the bass drum is the best example).

Karl,

you are aggrivating me by not getting those mic specifics. have him write it down. Your band should be keeping notes with this info anyways. YUP.

All cool man.
I am no expert in the topic "Different brands and specs of mics", I always try to learn about technique, but rather first about mic positioning and settings. I know that those are Audix, I will ask him again when I see him.

Sorry, personally the way of recording is for me the main thing, the specs of them are in the backround because I myself can`t do much with the specs, can do much more with tips I ask for about positioning and mixing.

I don`t see him every day so it could last a long time till I can ask him for the specs again. Please have some endurance...
