Default The Latest: My Session Customs

EDIT: See newest posts for some updates!

Here they are as of today, the 19th of December. You'll also see my drumhead and CD signed by Mr. Stanton Moore, as well as closeups of my new Hybrid X Dark Jazz Ride and Diamond Trash Crash (both Saludas), as well as my 13" Paiste Dimensions Light hats which I got for $70. Enjoy!

Yeah, I did. Stanton played a show in my town (like a once-in-a-lifetime event) that probably under 200 people came to because nobody here knows who Galactic is. So, I got lucky enough to be walking by while they were unloading their gear and got Stanton to sign the head, then later on at the concert I bought a CD which he also gladly signed. I got to talk to him and pick his brains about a little groove he does on the track "Licorice" off his new CD. Of course, I was so starstruck that I could hardly find anything to say.

Thanks for the compliments, bro.

Whao! That set looks awesome and probably fun as heck to play on. How are those Saludas sounding? I'm thinking of trading in some old cymbals for em.

Keep jammin'.

How do you like the Saludas?

I just ordered a set this week. I also picked up a 14" Hybrid X Trash Crash from Saluda on eBay. Just got it today and I love the sound. I think it will go well with the other cymbals I ordered. See my other post if your interested in my selection.

Licorice has a sick feel, but it's not my favorite on III. Don't Be Bringing No Weak Sauce has got to be my favorite track, though. You play any second line type stuff?

Man, the Saludas are the best. I've only tried their more trashy models thus far, but if these have been anything close to the quality of the rest of their cymbals, Saluda's the only way to go. I just got a recording of my modern rock trio, on which I used my Saluda ride as a crash, and it sounds a little like a china cymbal when I was really smacking it. Just really great stuff.

Yeah, man. It's a fun job, if a little tough on the back. But the paychecks are helpful when it comes to buying gear.

I love that kind of music. I don't play it a whole lot, but I did do a little with it the other day while I was just jamming, and I felt like it was pretty fun, so maybe I'll work it a little more and see what happens. As for Licorice, I like the groove (well, I like all the grooves), but I LOVE that break that they do a few times where it's just Stanton and its this really kind of separated shuffley feel. Actually, I was talking with Stanton while the band was taking a break (he came out to push merch and sign autographs) and I asked him about that and how he counted it, and he couldn't really answer before he had to leave to play again, but I've been listening and trying to work it out.

very inspiring setup, so thanks for that. i've been trying to dream up a layout for the nonsense in my head, not to mention an excuse to spend money. excellent!

also, what sticks are you using?

Thanks for the compliments. This is, in my (ever so humble) opinion, the best layout for a set with this many toms (I haven't tried Neil's yet), as it allows the ride cymbal to be when it would be in a 4-piece setup (in fact, it is essentially a 4-piece, with others stuffed in around those basic 4 drums), but lets you have all those other choices. It is also a really perfect excuse to spend money, as there is always something that can be better, or more cymbals to be bought, or (maybe in my case) a new bass pedal.

I'm using lots of different sticks, for jazz I'm using the Peter Erskine model, as it seems to be one of the few Vic Firth lines that has much merit left. I also have a pair of Promark "Acid Jazz" sticks that I use, and some SD2 Boleros from VF which I haven't used much yet. For everything else, I sometimes use my Ahead sticks to avoid expensive breaking. Otherwise, I have some Promark 5B Pro-Rounds that I like, and my 5A-Stingers that I got for free from Promark. I have some SD2s that I use for my college wind ensemble. I think that's about it.

Yeah man, the Saludas are incredible. So versatile and delicious.

The 15" tom is actually down to the left of the hi-hat, like I originally planned. I checked the distance between the rack leg and my ride cymbal (where the 13" tom is) and there's just not enough room to fit it there. So, not actaully a whole lot has changed, just the cymbal setup has changed significantly, and the addition of the 15" tom, and the move of the 12" above that. Also I've put in 2 cowbells, one on either side of the 13", although they are kinda hard to see in the pics.

For some reason it reminds me of a Carmine Appice/ Ian Piece set up with the small toms in the middle of the rack toms

Yeah, I've heard that before. I just say, this is what works for me, and if it resembles somebody famous's drumset, all the cooler!

Yeah man, I'm starting to think about it. Although I've gotten so accustomed to playing a small bass I can't imagine what it would be like to have a big 22x18". I've actually thought about buying one and cutting it down to a classic type 22x14" for the versatility, but I think the tom mount would be problematic. We'll see.

Yeah, it seems like almost every set these days comes with a 22x18. I just like the vintageness and sound of the 14" depth. Plus it's a lot less to lug around.

So I got this idea this morning, maybe I should set up like Neil Peart. Seeing as I have enough toms, and maybe enought hardware, I might try it. Thoughts?

That thing never leaves the house. I only take a 4-piece set of it, using one of the 12" toms, the 16", bass and snare. Even that seems like a lot of work...

Yeah, that's pretty much the approach I've taken. I just want to have possibilities, that is, to use smaller toms for lower volume gigs, etc. But when they're all at home, I get to play with them all.

It took a few different setups before I came up with the setup I use now, some of which can be seen on my myspace page. The reason I've settled on this one is that it lets me have everything (especially the ride cymbal) where I want it. Unfortunately, some of the toms are pretty far away from me, but that's the price I have to pay.

Somebody stop me before I tear it all apart and try to set up like Neil....Please!

Actually, I do have a recording of it where I used it as a crash with my modern rock band, but I would be embarassed to post it up here because I didn't do very well on the drum track.

Ok, so my 18" Floor tom arrived today, but at some point, in shipping or otherwise, the batter side hoop was dented. So I've contacted the seller about it, and we'll see if we can make it right. Otherwise, it sounds pretty sweet. The EC2 and Clear G1 for it should be arriving Thursday from Massmusic.

Very nice kit. I love the cymbals and i am really thinking about getting a custom saluda china since they seem to be the in thing around here.

Thanks. The Saludas are just amazing cymbals. Get one, and you'll see what I mean.

I think I'm going to go for it and get myself a Remote Hi Hat stand. I'm thinking I'll put it over by my ride and eliminate my current stand, so I'll be able to play without crossing arms (or, cheater open handed). That will give me some space to move the toms to my left more to the right, thus condensing everything and just making it easier to play. Maybe I'll try using both sets of hats first, though, and see how that goes.

Well, some new additions lately.

Today I went down to the drum shop and picked up a bunch of new heads:

12" G2 coated to replace the one that I think was defective.
16" EC2 coated to replace the one that got dented when I got excited.
and 5 different snare heads to experiment with:
Aquarian Texture Coated
Remo Ambassador
Evans Power Center Reverse Dot
Evans Genera
and the lone 2-ply, an EC Coated

On order: 18" tom hoop to replace one damaged in shipping. Apparently it's backordered, and I'm getting impatient.

And then of course the new 17" Diamond Trash Crash (now vented) to replace the one that I cracked. As for the old one, I think I'm going to cut it down to maybe 14" and make a nice trashy splashy crash.

Well, I'm going to be starting a new thread in this forum pretty soon, because at 9:00 tomorrow morning I'm going to be picking up a set of 1958 Slingerlands! Just the 2 toms and bass, 13, 16, 22. From what I've seen thus far, the wrap looks to be in good condition. The paint on the bass drum hoops looks like it needs some touching up, but nothing difficult.

Really looking forward to this guys! I plan on posting pics only after I get them all cleaned up and shiny, though, so don't get your hopes up... ;)

Yeah, that is a precursor to my kit, and is not quite the same quality. I think it's Maple and Mahogany, while mine is just maple. Also, mine has the superior tom mounts.
