Here is something you might try:

Vic Firth 8D (Jazz). It is a half inch longer than the 7a and the same diameter, so it won't feel like a 5a. I have used this model for 14 years and have found them to a be a very versatile stick!

If you can tolerate Zildjian sticks, they make a 6A that could fit the bill.

I'm a big fan of Vater's New Orleans Jazz stick. It's smaller than a 5A and probably fits your requirements pretty well.

Yea, the 8D is a good size if you're looking for something in between. The design of the stick is basically the same as both the 5A and 7A, just tweaked to a size in the middle. I used it for years.

I would go with an 85A. It is not as heavy as a 5A, but heavier than a 7A.

Is this a Vic Firth Stick? I seem to vaguely remember them making this model.

85A is a Vic Firth stick. It sits right between the 5A and the 8D. They're all the same length but the 85A is just a little fatter than the 8D.

I think the nice people over at Vic Firth sent me a pair of 85As. I'll have to check.

These sticks are incredible, if you can find someone who sells em.

Look at the Power Grip Rock model or the tribal assault model. They have all the specs on each stick when you click on it.

My Instructor gave me an old pair of the Power grip ones and man were they incredible. I plan on taking a motorcycle trip this summer over to vermont and visiting the factory and buying a few pairs. Hopefully they have a discount at the factory.
