Default My Gretsch

Hey guys,

My pride and joy is a Gretsch Renown Purewood 6pce. with Cherrywood shells. 1 in 100...beautiful kit.

10" x 7" and 12" x 8" mounted toms
14" x 12" and 16" x 14" floor toms
22" x 18" kick
and 14" x 6.5" snare

Right now I only have a crap picture frozen from a dodgy video of me playing...but I'll get some good ones up soon...promise :P

The cymbals have changed, and the rack toms have been lowered and flattened, because I like it that way.

Anyway my cymbals are as follows:

Sabian AA Regular 14" Hats
Zildjian A Custom 14" Fast Crash
Sabian Pro Sonix 16" Crash
Sabian Signature Series Will Calhoun Ambient Ride 21"
Zildjian ZBT 20" Ride with paperclip sizzlers, and a set of cracked ZBT 14" Hats stacked for a trashy sound
And also at the moment I have my old ZXT Hats set loosely on a hit-hat stand for when I want to play double-kick and ride on the hats, or just for an extra sound.

There you have it. As I said I'll get a more accurate pic of my drums soon :)

Thanks for reading,

Harley

Looks like a great kit, even though we can't really see much of it in that pic... ;)
Make sure you post some good pics of how its set up now.

So I lived up to my promise...the colour in the photos isn't the best but they're from my phone so its the best I can do...

Don't mind the dodgy old maroon kit in the background, that was my first kit and I'm currently teaching on it. Also notice my most loyal cymbal, the upside down, half-inverted ZBT hi-hat top stacked on the others :P

I hope they've done my kit some justice :)

Well it retails in Australia for AU$5,000...but I got it for AU$4,300 or so. It's worth every cent. Thanks for your kind words, too :)

EDIT: Haha that's obviously not including the cymbals, Iron Cobra or other hardware tho :P I also have a Wuhan 8" Splash, but I need a mount for it.

Beautiful kit. I was considering picking up a Catalina Mod for that huge bass drum...I love that natural finish!

Beautiful ------------- yes, great, I`m just curious how it sounds...can you describe the sound character? and how is the 21" Ambient Ride??

however, overall it seems very cool!

Thanks for your responses again :)

As for the sound, the mounted toms give a smooth, sweet sound, but you can also get an almost timbale-like sound out of them if given a loud rimshot. The floor toms are very resonant and full, and still manage to give a melodic sound even tuned down extra low, which is how I have it. The snare drum has coped with any tuning I've thrown at it; from a loose, fat 80's rock sound right up to a tight, crisp R 'n' B sound...it's very versatile, which I was surpised with because its such a deep snare. The kick drum has to be the fattest, deepest, fullest bass drum I've ever played. It's awesome. The best sound I've had from it is having the batter head a little looser than usual, and then tightening up the resonator head fairly well...it gives me such a fat sound, but it's never boomy.

As for the Ambient ride, it's best described here. It's exactly as it's described but I don't think the sample does it justice on the Sabian website. There are many different sounds you can get out of it, but the one word that comes to mind is "mysterious".

Cheers.

Cool pics, even though it doesnt have the best color quality in the picture, i can easily see how amazing that finish is.

Man, that is one pretty kit! I'm loving the general resurgence of the "old standard" makers, ie Gretsch, Ludwig, etc. They seem to be back to making quality products, and it's good to see more people appreciating that. Great kit.

Great kit, I too am an owner of one of the Purewood kits, but the 2004/5 Walnut version.

Check it out. http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=17850

Thanks :) And yes, as of late I've seen a lot more Ludwig and Gretsch, even a bit more Slingerland :P I saw a blue perspex (excuse my lack of technical name for it) Ludwig a couple of weeks ago in a music shop and I almost felt the need to come back and raid the joint not so long after. It was amazing.
